Darneth was of the slippery sort. Long and lithe, she could easily go where much larger dragons could not. Water didn't deter her, and those wings of her, though small, enabled her to fly at least for short distances.
She was considered a menace amongst the dragons of the Mountain. She would steal eggs from unattended clutches, and even steal a dragon's hard-won prey from right under their nose. Many a dragon had a tale to tell of Darneth and her capers.
Fria was one who had such a tale, though she herself did not remember it. While in her egg, she nearly became one of Darneth's misappropriated dinners. Fortunately, the clutch was not unattended as Darneth had originally thought. Though the parents of the clutch had indeed gone out hunting, Kanul saw the thief and knew she was up to no good.
As Darneth ran with her stolen prize, Kanul gave chase. Darneth was quick and cunning but she wasn't used to being caught in the act, and the egg was large and awkward to carry. As Kanul closed in on her, she abandonned the egg and ran for her life. Kanul changed course as he saw the egg roll down a passage which he knew led to the outside. It would surely fall off the edge of the cliff. Grasping it in his claws, he tried to find his way back.
But even for the dragons that live there, the caves are a labyrinth of passages and tunnels. Most know one entrance, and how to get to their own cavern from there. Darneth had done her best to try and confuse the larger dragon, and she had succeeded. He was unable to find his way back to where he had begun. Thus, he left through the nearest opening, and returned to his own lair.
This was then the story of how Fria came to be with Kanul. He cared for her as an egg and as a hatchling. This took years, for dragons age very slowly. At last Fria had safely become an adult, able to care for herself.
And Darneth knew very well to avoid those two at all costs.
