You! Sunny

Main Elements Unicorns

You have a new baby brother, and he gets ALL the attention. Your parents notice you feel left out and they give you a very special present of your own: your own pony to ride and care for in the stable. But your pony, Sunny, has a big secret. She's actually a baby unicorn! Can you keep the secret as the whole town prepares for the Berry Days Festival?

When I was in elementary school, Choose Your Own adventure was a big deal, everyone wanted to own and read them. As I got older I started finding them pretty boring. If I had realized this was a Choose Your Own Adventure when I spotted it in the library, I probably would have passed it by. But having read it, I think it would be a lot of fun for the right age group.

Now because this book is targetted at even younger readers than I was (mine weren't picture books!) all the paths lead to happy endings, overly happy if you ask me. I remember you, or other characters, would outright die in the older books! Also, because it is so short most of the ends are "and you're adventures are just about to begin" kind of ending, which is pretty disappointing for a Choose Your Own Adventure where you expect things to well, end...several times over. Now I feel is need to not just jump to another page but jump to another book to know what happened next.

The illustrations were ok, I didn't love them as the unicorn was pretty blocky looking, but guess it was a baby, it would grow into something resembling the elegance I expect from a unicorn? But the pages were nice and colourful even if the story was very silly.

I still kept one last Choose Your Own Adventure book for nostalgia sake, also a unicorn one (The Magic of the Unicorn). I just dug up the review for that one, how interesting I write it up also in April, but 22 years ago, which was also more than a decade from when I first read the book. How time flies but some trends just hang around. Must admit one trend that is disappointing is that artwork went downhill, just compare the covers of both books! Somewhere along the way instead of being magical and beautiful unicorns became goofy. How sad.
