Rory is afraid of winter's darkness, imagining that monsters and demons might creep out from the shadows and cold. So, with paint and glitter, he crafts a Winter Dragon of emerald green with a crest of brilliant red. Each night the dragon comes alive to tell him stories of knights and battles, of elf-kings and treasure hoards. Through these dreamtime adventures, Rory grows brave. But as spring approaches, the Winter Dragon has his own dream: returning to his fiery home. Caroline Pitcher's evocative prose and Sophy Williams's atmospheric artwork make this a memorable story of overcoming fear with imagination.

The artwork in this book is beautiful, everything soft and magical, and even dramatic at times as Rory flies to other worlds on his Winter Dragon. The dragon protects him at night from the scary things in the dark and it keeps him warm as the winter chill sets in. But as time passes, the dragon Rory made begins to fall apart, the paint wears off and eventually Rory has to let his friend go back to his home and to face the world on his own.
