Horse is brown. Horse is plain. And Horse can't stand the unicorn he shares a pen with. Unicorn dances. Tra la la! Horse does not. Blah blah blah. But when robbers kidnap Unicorn for a local circus, what will Horse decide to do? Packed with forty-eight pages of hilarious illustrations and deadpan wit, Unicorn (and Horse) is a funny yet endearing lesson on envy with one important truth: We are sometimes unicorns. We are sometimes horses. And happiness doesn't always come from pink cupcakes for breakfast.

Seems the unicorn is cool vs some other animal that isn't is a common theme in children's unicorn books (I just read one with a goat). After all unicorns are magical, they eat pink cupcakes for breakfast, they have a horn, everyone likes them, and they fart rainbows. Horse is brown, he eats hay, he doesn't have a horn...and let's just say what comes out his other end isn't colourful.

But being bright and beautiful has it's downsides, like people might want to kidnap you to see for a lot of money. When that happens Horse has a decision to make, to let the thieves get away or to rescue Unicorn. The squirrel couldn't run fast enough to do it, and bird couldn't fly fast enough, and turtle can't run at all, only horse is fast and has teeth to cut through the ropes holding Unicorn. So maybe Horse is kind of special too. And Unicorn doesn't mind sharing some cupcakes, and is willing to try hay, and what comes out your other end might depend on what you eat rather than on magic after all.

The artwork is nice, not gorgeous but not completely goofy either so I really enjoyed this tale of overcoming jealousy and seeing that rather than be envious of someone else, you can get pleasure from being their friend, and you know, it isn't always greener on the other side, at least no one will kidnap you!
