Main Characters

Jack

Main Elements Trolls

Young Jack's world was full of ghosts and ghouls, but one monster-a ravenous and hideous troll-would haunt him long into manhood. As the beast sups upon a lifetime of Jack's fear and regret, Jack must find the courage within himself to face the fiend once and for all!

Based on the blurb you might think this is a book for kids. But if you've read Gaiman, you know that's something you can't assume, and this book deals not with the fairy tale of having to pay a toll to the troll under the brige, but in dealing with the troll that lurks deep in one's soul.

Jack encounters this troll one day and convinces the troll that he would be so much tastier if he were older. Not only would he be bigger but he'd have more life experiences to dine upon. So the troll lets him go. Years pass and Jack returns with his girlfriend. The troll wants him now, but Jack still isn't ready, so he offers the troll the girl. Yes, you see how things start to kind of go downhill now.

I'd love to write more, especially about how the story ends, but I don't want to give too much away so I'll have to stop.

The artwork was good too, and the troll quite terrifying (and naked, see not quite a kids book even though the cover looks ok). I borrowed this from the library but there's always something about Gaiman's retellings that makes one want to own a copy for oneself.
