The Seeker
THE GODS ARE ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL... AND THE GODS ARE ALWAYS DEAD.
Captain Malik and the crew of the spaceship the Vihaan II are in search of the only resources that matter—and can only be found by harvesting the giant corpses of alien gods that are found on the edge of human space. While other autopsy ships and explorers race to salvage the meat, minerals, and metals that sustain the human race, Malik sees an opportunity to finally break free from this system: by being the first to find a living god.
But Malik’s obsession with the gods will push his crew into the darkest reaches of space, bringing them face to face with a threat unlike anything they ever imagined, unless the rogue agent on their trail can stop them first...
Superstars Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk) and Simone Di Meo (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) present a new sci-fi epic about the search for meaning and the hard choices we make to find it, no matter the cost to the world—or universe—around us.
Collects We Only Find Them When They’re Dead #1-5.

The Soul
The Conclusion of the Multiple Eisner Award-Nominated Epic Sci-fi Series, Flashing Forward 50 Years into a Fateful Future!
It began with questioning the Gods. It ends here… once again… at the edge of the universe. Thierry-9, an A.I. cultured from the corpse of God Malik, awakens face-to-face with Jason Hauer, now a shell of a man at the end of his life. Their conversations lead Thierry-9 on a journey through space, time, and Malik’s memories, retracing the fateful flight of the Vihaan II on a quest to discover—once and for all—the origins of the Gods. The lines between humanity and the divine blur even further as we hurtle towards the conclusion of this Eisner-nominated interstellar series from acclaimed writer Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk) and artist Simone Di Meo (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers). Collects We Only Find Them When They’re Dead #11-15.
I'll admit it, the reason I picked these up from the library was the title, and intriguing concept, finding actual gods but when you do, they are already dead. Presumably there are live ones somewhere but in the meantime crews of autopsy ships carve up the god, taking its armour, its flesh and bones and organs and using them for various purposes such as food, weaponry and powering A.I. Yes, it is very weird and kind of creepy.
Of course when dealing with gods you will also find yourself dealing with religion. From people who just view the gods as a natural resource to those that want to worship the dead gods to those that want to find the live ones (most of those who try never come back). Politics, greed and fanaticism abound. However...in the end I couldn't really get that much into the story, I didn't find myself caring about the characters since even the protagonists were either crazy or just not very nice people.
And then the artwork...it's...unique? It was like looking at everything through blurry coloured glass. When I first flipped through it I wasn't sure how I wasn't going to see anything at all in the image, though I got kind of used to it, I never started liking it. There was only a random scene here or there where I thought the effect was very appropriate but most of the time it just made it hard to see what was going on. And I had tons of trouble telling characters apart.
And of course I find out its not a duology as I'd hoped, I need to keep an eye on publish dates! So I'll have to wait to see how things turn out, but I'm willing to do that if I borrow from the library.
