I've been reading a lot of unicorn books for this age group lately and they are starting to grow on me. I like the simplicity of the, the positiveness of them. About the bonding between friends, whether those friends are unicorns or humans. They are very quick reads, usually taking me an hour or two at most, if on my eReader I can finish them during my commute time on a single day. But their optimism raises one's spirit and makes one long for a unicorn of their own.

In Linda Chapman's Unicorn School we have unicorns going to, well, school to learn magic. In her My Secret Unicorn, unicorns in our world bond with humans. Julie Sykes takes the human bonding and the school idea and has Unicorn Academy (note - I saw Linda Chapman's name in the credits of book so seems she's involved here too). Girls and boys living on a magical island go to school to bond with a unicorn at school, and in turn, the unicorns go to learn what their magic powers are. Together they are to graduate and then go out an protect their island home.

I like how in this series it will focus on different pairings in each book, even as other characters show up on the side. One thing I'm disappointed in is that none of the boys get to have any books! I mean sure, the books are meant for girls but it's not like girls can't read a book where a boy is a main character and vice-versa...and besides, isn't everyone reading these books for the unicorns anyway!?!

Since they are so new my library only has some of them, but I'll be keeping an eye out for it adding more to their collection.

April 2024

I decided to take this year to catch up on all the unicorn books published since 2019 and there were quite a few more books added to the Unicorn Academy series, including a couple new spinoffs. I started with the Treasure Hunt, a set of four books where four friends seek to find the four pieces of a treasure map. I guess my one concern was that the girls kept doing things they shouldn't do and sometimes outright risking their lives by seeking "adventure" rather than being sensible (e.g. it was possible to walk alongside the underground river and yet the girls took a raft while the unicorns walked alongside...wanna bet there was a waterfall involved?). Guess I'm just a Misty who likes to err on the not dying side :)
