The Unicorn Quest
A secret ladder.
A missing sister.
A dangerous world of magic and adventure.
Claire's older sister, Sophie, has always been the brave one - even when she was sick with an illness no one could name. So when the girls discover a ladder in the fireplace of their new home, it's Sophie who leads the way up...and up...and up...and into a fantastical land filled with castles, magic, and strange creatures.
But the world of Arden is in trouble. The four guilds of magic no longer trust one another, the beloved unicorns have disappeared, and horrible wraiths roam freely. Terrified, the girls return home, but it's not long before Sophie goes missing. It will take all of Claire's courage to climb back up the ladder, save her sister, and bring them both home safely. But first, she will have to discover the secret of the unicorns...
This first installment in Kamilla Benko's enchanting debut series introduces a lushly magical world, an extraordinary quest, and the promise of many more thrilling adventures to come.
It's starts off like Narnia, or even Vicky Blum's unicorn series, where a couple girls discover a portal to another world in some part of an old house (whether it be a wardrobe, a crack in a cellar, or in this case, a ladder in a fireplace). This is a world where magic works and people are divided up into guilds depending on their magic (stone, plants, textiles, metals). They used to intermingle their magics to make even more impressive works, but after a guild war they are no longer allowed to interact with each other, especially after the last unicorn was turned to stone, unicorn magic of course being more powerful than any of the others. And this is the world where Clare must search to find her missing sister Sophie, a world of great danger to someone with no magic at all. Fortunately she befriends a Tiller and a Forger, each with their own complicated backgrounds, who decide to help her find Sophie and the magic Unicorn Harp she supposedly stole.
I enjoyed the first book, there were a lot of mysteries, misdirections and misunderstands, and Benko did a good job building her world. And the fact that the sisters truly love and care for each other, they don't fight all the time, and Clare hunts for her sister out of love and not out of say guilt for being mean, that was a refreshing take on the sibling trope. I definitely look forward to reading the other books in the series.
