The Barnabus Project
In a world built for Perfect Pets, Barnabus is a Failed Project, half mouse, half elephant, kept out of sight until his dreams of freedom lead him and his misfit friends on a perilous adventure. A stunning picture book from international bestsellers The Fan Brothers, joined by their brother Devin Fan.
Deep underground beneath Perfect Pets, where children can buy genetically engineered "perfect" creatures, there is a secret lab. Barnabus and his friends live in this lab, but none of them is perfect. They are all Failed Projects. Barnabus has never been outside his tiny bell jar, yet he dreams of one day seeing the world above ground that his pal Pip the cockroach has told him about: a world with green hills and trees, and buildings that reach all the way to the sky, lit with their own stars. But Barnabus may have to reach the outside world sooner than he thought, because the Green Rubber Suits are about to recycle all Failed Projects . . . and Barnabus doesn't want to be made into a fluffier pet with bigger eyes. He just wants to be himself. So he decides it's time for he and the others to escape. With his little trunk and a lot of cooperation and courage, Barnabus sets out to find freedom -- and a place where he and his friends can finally be accepted for who they are.
This suspenseful, poignant and magical story about following your dreams and finding where you truly belong will draw readers into a surreal, lushly detailed world in which perfection really means being true to yourself and your friends.
Barnaby Unboxed!
Follow perfect pet Barnaby on his perilous journey home through bustling streets, mysterious alleyways, and the untamed wilds of city parks. A standalone picture book set in the world of The Barnabus Project from The Fan Brothers, joined by their brother Devin Fan.
Meet Barnaby, he's half mouse, half elephant, with a dash of flamingo . . . and fully trained! When he's brought home to be pampered and cared for by his very own little girl, life is perfect . . . until a new, even more perfect pet comes on the scene. Suddenly Barnaby is no longer the most perfect pet around, and his little girl doesn't seem interested in him anymore. Feeling unappreciated, Barnaby runs away and finds himself swept up on a wild journey through the city and an emotional search for home in a tale of love found, lost and found again.
One thing that was a very nice touch was how the second book tied in with the first. They aren't required to be read in order, but there are little bits and pieces that connect them, like the state of the street where the shops are, or who is hiding out in the park. I loved those little details, if you can, get both books at the same time and compare them side by side.

You know what thought just crossed my mind as I was setting up this review? Flamingos aren't really pink! At least you won't get the pink from using their DNA, its the shrimp they eat that give them their colour.
I saw this book on a morning news segment and the picture on the cover just made me go "Awwww...." it was so cute. Now of course the books were popular so whenever I dropped by the library they weren't there but today I got lucky and nabbed both. And they were totally as cute as they appeared.
The artwork is gorgeous...yes, I'm actually saying that. Its pretty rare when I'm impressed with modern illustrations in kids picture books, they're usually about the same quality as the kids themselves can manage. But these illustrations are right and detailed, with lovely colours and of course, super cute critters.
These books are packed with morals, like not being perfect is ok, you can achieve what you want if you put your mind to it, teamwork and friendship and more if you include the other one, where maybe being perfect isn't all that its cracked up to be. The books are actually 80 pages long which is lengthy for a picture book like this, but I wasn't complaining, the cuteness kept my eyes glued to the page.
