Worf's First Adventure
Before he was an officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise...
Cadet Worf arrived at Starfleet Academy as the first Klingon to gain entrance since the Federation-Klingon Peace Treaty. Raised on Earth by human parents, Worf wonders if he is still a Klingon, the proud member of an honorable warrior race, or is he more... human? Where does he fit in?
Command-level classes fill his schedule, but nothing prepares him for his fellow cadets, among them his human foster brother. Intelligent, ambitious, and confident, the Academy cadets make life difficult for the young warrior. How can he win over his classmates -- including the always logical Vulcans and the fierce Brikar -- if they are still trained to think of him as the enemy?
When a routine trip to a training satellite turns into an unexpected disaster, Worf must unite the cadets and risk his life before a terrible accident destroys the entire mission.
Line of Fire
Mission to Dantar
Mysterious space raiders are threatening the joint Federation-Klingon colony on the remote planet of Dantar, and pitting the two sides against each other. Worf and his fellow first year cadets -- Zak, Tania, Soleta, and Mark -- have accompanied their teacher to observe the negotiation process, but soon find themselves in the middle of an intergalactic dispute.
Just as Worf and the other cadets arrive, they discover the Klingon Empire has sent its own diplomatic team, including Klingon cadets, to investigate the attacks. As the cadets from Starfleet Academy come face to face with their Klingon counterparts, tensions quickly mount as each side accuses the other of staging the raids.
While a deadly space battle rages overhead, Worf faces his ultimate test as his Klingon heritage and future in Starfleet collide.
Survival
Rescue Overdue
Deadly space raiders have destroyed the colony on Dantar. Now stranded on this remote planet, surrounded by the burning fires of the abandoned colony, Worf, his friends from Starfleet Academy, and cadets from the Klingon Empire fight to survive. They face harsh weather, low supplies, and hidden dangers.
As suspicion between the Klingon and Starfleet cadets grows, the camp quickly becomes a battleground, with Worf right in the middle.
But Worf and the others soon realize they are not alone as they face a mysterious and dangerous alien warrior. Klingons and humans now must unite and work together before their first mission in deep space becomes their last...
Capture the Flag
It's Geordi La Forge's first year at Starfleet Academy TM, and it isn't going well. He's been all over the galaxy with his Starfleet officer parents, and his blindness has not been a handicap, thanks to his VISOR. But somehow he's always picked last for competitive teams, and deep down he wants to be just like all the other confident students. When he defeats the top-ranked team in an elimination game, Geordi wins the respect of his classmates, and the hatred of the other team's captain, Jack Pettey. Pettey threatens revenge, and his opportunity arrives with training exercises on the planet Saffair. Geordi's team faces Pettey's, and without supervision on the uninhabited world Pettey will stop at nothing to win.
Atlantis Station
Mind Games
Earthquake!
Geordi LaForge and his fellow cadets are headed to Atlantis Station, the underwater research base located near a volcano in the Atlantic Ocean. Up until now Geordi has spent most of his life in space with his Starfleet officer parents and he is more than ready to explore this strange, new world deep underwater.
The first stop for the cadets is the above-ground complex on Isla del Fuego, where the students barely escape a small volcanic eruption. They finally arrive at the underwater station shaken and fighting among themselves, but determined to carry out their assignments.
Then suddenly an earthquake rocks the station and the cadets are trapped in their lab with tempers running high. Now, as debris blocks their path back to the aquashuttle, Geordi and the others, "together," must race against time and the dangers of the freezing seawater to escape the station before it disappears into an underwater abyss!
Mystery of the Missing Crew
Before he was an office aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise...
An android is found in the ruins of a colony on Omicron Theta. The crew of the Tripoli reactivate the android and discover his name is Data, a name that suits his incredible curiosity. With the encouragement of his new friends, Data applies to Starfleet Academy and is accepted.
Cadet Data begins his journey to Starfleet Academy aboard the science vessel, Yosemite. Even as he looks forward to the Academy, he struggles to find his own identity and to fit in with the other cadets.
But Data's worries are cut short when the Yosemite is suddenly attacked by an unknown vessel and suffers severe damage. When power is restored, Data discovers that the adult crew has mysteriously disappeared, and only Data and the other Academy-bound cadets are left to face the wrath of a new alien race, who are demanding that Data and his cadet crew surrender their ship, or be destroyed!
Secret of the Lizard People

Starfall
When Jean-Luc Picard fails his entrance exam to Starfleet Academy, all his plans for the future are gone. Then a chance to re-apply to the Academy arises, and Jean-Luc must use all his skills to pass the challenging tests.
Nova Command
Before he became the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise...
Cadet Jean-Luc Picard is struggling through his first year at the Academy. He's near the top of his classes, right behind Roger Wells. Jean-Luc is determined to do everything better and bigger than Roger. But privately he has doubts. And the lack of communication from home only reminds him of how badly he left things with his father.
Then Jean-Luc and his friend, Marta, discover they've been selected to fly with the Nova Command team, a special training mission through the solar system. This is no simulation -- it's the real thing! Jean-Luc tries to ignore the presence of Roger, but the pressure builds between the two cadets. When the mission leader falls ill and the ship receives a distress call, Jean-Luc and the other cadets must decide whether to obey orders or attempt a rescue... as the ship heads for disaster!
Loyalties
Beverly Howard is in "big trouble at the Academy. They've just begun their first year as Starfleet Medical Cadets, and already Beverly and her roommate Claire Voy are one step from probation. Commander Max Wiley, who teaches the holodeck simulation course in Medical Emergencies, caught them skipping class to visit an excavation in nearby San Francisco. He took them to the Admiral's office and has put them on notice. One more slip and they're out! When Claire's partner in her Medical Emergencies class is injured, Commander Wiley blames Claire for the accident. But "was it an accident? It is the Commander's word against Claire's. Wiley has no reason to lie -- or does he? Beverly's own investigation takes her from the computer labs to the Admiral's office. Now Claire's future hangs in the balance unless Beverly and Data can find a way to clear her -- without being expelled themselves!
Crossfire
Will Riker believes that it is an honor to belong to the Starfleet Academy Band. When the big competition on the resort planet of Pacifica takes place, the Starfleet Academy Band is so good that they attract the attention of an alien warship. They are given a choice--perform for alien troops or be destroyed.
Breakaway
Before she was an officer aboard the "U.S.S. Enterprise.".. No one ever said Starfleet Academy would be easy, but Cadet Deanna Troi never expected it to be this hard, either. She's been taken prisoner by pirates on the "Borocco-Kai," and now she's weaponless and helpless.
Of course, its only a test: a holodeck exam all freshmen must pass. But for Deanna, the stakes are even higher than usual. She's opted to take the test early because it seemed like the only way to save her future at the Academy. Her telepathic abilities, natural aloofness, and an overbearing mother have made.
The Haunted Starship
----
Deceptions
Barely three months into his program at Starfleet Academy, Cadet Data is sent to the planet Arunu as part of a class research team investigating ancient ruins. The android is fascinated by the dead planet and its effect on his fellow cadets. All the newcomers -- except Data and the unemotional, pragmatic Dyrondites -- are experiencing the jitters as they approach the artifacts of a culture based purely on emotion. There is a lesson here for each of them. But it is Data who will be put to the test... Suddenly the communications system breaks down and they're trapped in Arunu. It's sabotage! Someone has discovered the ultimate weapon and plans to leave no witnesses behind. Data must use his relentless logic to infiltrate the enemy and save his friends before it's too late!
Lifeline
Cadet Kathyrn Janeway, the ambitious daughter of Vice Admiral Edward Janeway, is determined to prove herself at Starfleet Academy. Her tough commander, Etienne Mallet, demands perfection, but Kathyrn is ready for the challenge. It isn't easy, especially with two "two" roommates: a pair of identical Diasoman twins named ThrumPol. Kathyrn thinks she can face the pressure alone, but when she and Pol fail their second dorm drill and Mallet assigns them to a holodeck test, Kathyrn panics. Suddenly, she's out of control!
It's time to call on her secret weapon to help her through the crisis...until Mallet discovers her weakness and issues the ultimate challenge....
The Chance Factor
It's Cadet Kathyrn Janeway's last chance to prove her fitness as a future Starfleet officer: a field study on a wilderness planet involving alien animals and their handlers. Captain Holbrook's menageries of snarling, exotic beasts doesn't bother her. Their unruly alien handlers do. With an arrogant Klingon, an aggressive Talarian and an insecure Betazoid on the team, the war has begun even before they're beamed down to Diehr IV. "How can I prove myself when I'm saddled with this bunch?" Kathyrn wonders. It seems like an impossible mission as she desperately tries to get everyone to cooperate....
Time is running out as Kathyrn leads her mission through treacherous territory to the exit point -- only to discover that they are marooned on the alien planet! Now they "must" pull together -- or perish!

Crisis on Vulcan
A young Spock accompanied his father, the Vulcan diplomat Sarek, to the planet Marath to help negotiate a peace treaty. With the signed treaty safely in hand, they board the Starship Enterprise and head home. Spock is fascinated by the easy acceptance of his Vulcan culture by the bright, adventurous Starfleet crew headed by Captain Robert April and his first officer, Christopher Pike. Spock, half-Vulcan, half-human, is now torn between accepting his position at the Vulcan Science Academy or joining the cadets at Starfleet Academy.
Before he can decide, however, he and Sarek discover that not everyone is happy with the treaty. First, rebel forces attempt an assault on the Enterprise, and then Spock's own family is stalked. Spock has a hunch about who is behind the attacks. But to find out -- and set the course for his own destiny -- he'll have to trust his human side.
Aftershock
----
Cadet Kirk
James T. Kirk was a "by-the-book" Starfleet Academy cadet. Until he had to throw the book away!
It was a simple shuttle trip -- just a quick hop to a nearby planet where renowned computer genius Richard Daystrom will give a lecture. But then a tractor beam forces the shuttle to land at a remote Federation outpost. Medical Intern McCoy, Ensign Spock and Cadet Kirk have been kidnapped by space pirates! They're outnumbered and outgunned. McCoy and Spock simply want to escape and alert the authorities. But Professor Daystrom is the real target, and his shuttle will be entering this region of space soon. For Daystrom's sake, The fiery young Kirk is determined to destroy the pirates' outpost -- even if he has to do it alone.
If you ever wondered what kind of trouble the younger versions of the crew of the Enterprise got into while they were at Starfleet Academy, now you can find out. For the most part I found the stories a bit repetitive, basically your Enterprise crew member is a bit of a misfit (a Klingon, blind, an android) and they would get picked on by the "cool" kids, and then they'd have to join up with the other "nerds" and prove they are better than everyone else by saving the day when even the adults are left unable to solve the problem. Typical middle grade stuff, except that at Starfleet Academy, it's kind of like university no? So they shouldn't be acting like middle grade kids, they should be young adults, and even in some cases adults, depending at what age they choose to sign up.
So the stories come out a bit contrived to ensure the character in question has an opportunity to save the day and prove how much more amazing they are than the rest of the cadets around them. At the same time, even though silly at times, they were still kind of fun. Not all the characters could have crossover stories, they attended Starfleet Academy at different times but a few were able to meet up and have adventures together before they were assigned to the Enterprise.
I then discovered a trilogy of books about Janeway's time at Starfleet Academy, I particularly enjoyed the second one where she and a group of other young aliens had to work with animals, not that I could keep track of them all, between their species, their names and their handlers.
Following that I found a trilogy for the original series, we first get a book about Spock before he joins the academy, I don't know what the second onew as about but the third I found quite interesting. Kirk has a reputation for being a maverick, a rule breaker, but I've just be rewatching all three seasons of the original series...and in fact, many times when he does something "crazy" it's because he has orders to do it and he's determined to follow his orders. He's not the crazy kid from the 2009 movie and Cadet Kirk reminds us of what Kirk was before the timeline changed, when his father didn't die. In fact it had to be shown to him that sometimes one must think outside the rules, since no set of rules can cover every situation and a good commander is one that is able to react as circumstances change.
Most of these books can be found on OpenLibrary where you can read them for free, unfortunately their collection wasn't complete.
