The more I dig in the library, the more Star Trek graphic novels I find, which then sends me to Goodreads to find even more and then back again. I was curious what "Star Trek Volume 1" could possibly be, it turns out to be the first in a series of graphic novels that takes the crew from the Kelvin timeline original Star Trek crew and goes about re-envisioning some of the original TV episodes and making up some new adventures. By coincidence, I had started PVR'ing the original series to do a rewatch, though I haven't yet gotten around to starting on it, which means I can't really compare how "Where no Man has Gone Before" or "Galileo Seven" significantly changed the events in the origial episodes.
The new stories are interesting, picking up where we left off after Vulcan is destroyed by Nero, things we might have seen had we a TV series reboot rather than the movies.
And if nothing else, you have to grab the third volume. It's got tribbles. Lots and lots and lots of tribbles. And it's not a retelling of the original, remember the timeline is all different, so it's completely its own thing. As a reader, you know EXACTLY what those cute, purring little furballs as capable of, but the crew don't, so it's so much fun.
The fourth gives some background to the Keenser character, and since he never speaks in the movies this is the only place where you can find out more about him. The redshirt story was fun, again, poking fun at the redshirts while giving some background to the Hendorf character, as well as a visit to the Mirror Universe, only with the twist of Nero's arrival and how his advanced ship would influence the Terran Empire.
I enjoyed the fifth volume too, as it gave a little background story to each character, like why McCoy really ended up on a starship, Sulu and Chekov at the academy, Uhura in a shuttle accident, and Scotty's childhood and engineering misadventures.
In the first issue of Boldly Go we see how things might have happened if it was Kirk's timeline that encountered the Borg, and that even makes sense because the Narada was Borg technology and that would have attracted their attention.
