The Official Motion Picture Adaptation
JJ Abrams' blockbuster revitalization of the Star Trek franchise was the most thrilling film of the year. Now, under the direction of Abrams and screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, comes the highly anticipated graphic adaptation of the film! Additionally, new scenes and moments cut from the movie are revealed - an event no Star Trek fan can dare miss!
Countdown to Darkness
From the same creative team behind Star Trek Countdown, the bestselling prequel to JJ Abrams' 2009 blockbuster Star Trek, comes the all-new story leading directly into the movie event of 2013:
STAR TREK COUNTDOWN TO DARKNESS
On a routine survey mission to a remote planet, Captain James Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise become embroiled in a decades-old conflict between two factions of the indigenous population. The flames of their conflict have been fanned by the unexpected presence of a former captain of the Enterprise, long presumed to be dead. This is a must-have graphic novel for all Star trek fans!
Star Trek: Khan
Witness the shocking origin of Khan Noonien Singh from his earliest years through his rise to power during the epic Eugenics Wars! Behold the events that led to his escape from Earth aboard the Botany Bay! Learn the truth behind his re-awakening by Admiral Marcus and Section 31! It's the origin of Star Trek's greatest villain!
Now I usually find movie novelizations kind of terrible, so I probably won't review them much, but I was interesting in any of the prequel and sequel spinoffs.
Star Trek: Countdown - This is the story of Nemo, the Romulan that when back in time and basically made the Star Trek timeline incredibly confusing. I'm still struggling to keep track of what takes place in what timeline (and then Data is dead (Nemsis)...and then he isn't dead (Countdown)...and then he's dead again (Picard)...gah). Anyway, for what it is worth this takes place before the timelines actually change, giving us the story of how Romulus' is destroyed by a supernova, how Spock failed to save them, how Nemo sought revenge, and how everyone went back in time, just by complete convenient chance, to the Original series timeline, so that new movies could be made without having to worry if they fit in the original Kirk stories. For what it's worth I enjoyed this graphic novel, the art was pretty good and was a nice filler, something I could have used I was all confused at the start of the Picard series. The Picard Countdown graphic novel also covers this moment in time, somehow Picard was both running around with Spock trying to create red matter, and simultaneously trying to evacuate Romulans. Maybe he had a clone? Oh wait...that was Nemesis and didn't go so well...to be fair books are never considered cannon, so they don't need to entirely make sense, even amongst themselves.
Spock Reflections - During a trip back from the neutral zone, Spock reflects on moments in his life.
Star Trek: Nero - Where we find out how Nero kept busy between the time he went back in time and Spock arrived. It was mainly in a Klingon prison, but it was interesting to learn more about his ship (didn't clue in before it was Borg tech) and also a very different version of an encounter with a certain A.I. entity from the original series, I got a geeky thrill when I realized what it was.
Star Trek: The Official Motion Picture Adaptation - I've seen this movie a few times now, and somehow each time missed the fact that Kirk's uncle wanted to sell Kirk's father's car, which finally explains why Kirk drives it off the cliff. I mean I got he also wanted the daredevil thrill, but if the car was one of the few things belonging to his father he had left, why would he wreck it. But now I get it was to prevent his uncle benefitting from it's sale. Otherwise, well, its exactly like the movie, as it was supposed to be. I didn't understand why some images were blurred, after all they aren't stills from the movie, but the art was good.
Countdown to Darkness - The crew of the enterprise are sent to observe a pre-warp society only to find they've acquired advanced technology now. And oh there is a previous captain of the Enterprise, Robert April, helping out an group of aliens being oppressed by the dominant ones. And a daughter of Mudd (which I thought was a cute idea). But where did the tech come from? I didn't see how it tied into the Into Darkness movie, the new Khan movie except for one page at the end, maybe I'll have to rewatch it.
Star Trek:- Khan - On the other hand, this was interesting, getting Khan's history along with an explanation as to why he looks like Benedict Cumberbatch now instead of Ricardo Montalbán which someone in the book pointed out which I thought was amusing. You learn about the Eugenics War, somehow I always pictured it as a brief scuffle, not Khan's people taking over the entire planet and dividing it up between themselves, and then a tie-in with Section 31, which is showing up more and more in Trek lately, maybe because they have a TV series in mind...heh.
