Emissary
It's been twenty-five years since the original Star Trek television series debuted on network television - and today, the universe first seen in that show is more popular than ever. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was a huge box-office hit, and Star Trek: The Next Generation is now entering its sixth incredible season as the most popular hour of syndicated entertainment on television.
Now comes Deep Space Nine, a thrilling new addition to the Star Trek universe. Commanded by an embittered Starfleet officer and populated by a myriad of exotic aliens, the mysterious space station known as Deep Space Nine hovers on the edge of a wormhole, a doorway that leads to the galaxy's furthest reaches - and beyond...
The Siege
When Deep Space Nine is forced to curtail entry to the wormhole due to increased graviton emissions, an air of biting tension settles over the station. But when this anxiety leads to the murder of an Edeman religious leader, Commander Benjamin Sisko and Security Chief Odo realize they face a larger problem.
The missionary is only the first to die; soon Sisko and Odo have more lifeless bodies on their hands and a killer who strikes without motive. Then, both the Edemans and the Cardassians arrive threatening to destroy the station unless the murderer is given to them for retribution. Now in order to save Deep Space Nine and stop the killing, Odo must try to destroy a powerful assassin who is the only link to his mysterious past.
Bloodletter
Starfleet Command has learned that the Cardassians are planning to construct a base on the other side of the wormhole to establish a presence and claim the rich unexplored territory. Now, it falls to Commander Sisko, Major Kira, and the crew of Deep Space 9 to set up a Federation station there immediately.
Before Major Kira can deliver the new base, a fanatic from her violent past appears. Kira must engage in a life and death struggle with an enemy who will stop at nothing to destroy her, as the fate of Bajor, the wormhole, and possibly the entire Federation hangs in the balance.
I had just finished re-watching the entire Deep Space Nine series with my mom, at which point I remembered I had a bunch of the books, some of which were read, some not yet. I also found that OpenLibrary had a surprisingly huge number of the books so I was motivated to jump back into something I had done in year, read Star Trek books! To be honest there are so many I hadn't ever planned to review them, but since I'm reading them again, I might as well try to give each one a mini-review if I can.
Emissary - A novelization of the pilot episode. I rarely enjoy novelizations and this one was no different. Somehow it's weird to hear the thoughts of characters you are used to watching on screen, especially as they go through scenes you are familiar with.
The Siege - The first original novel, written after only 5 episodes had been aired. Was impressed that the characters rang to true given so little for the author to work with, though not convinced a changeling could survive fine in the vaccuum of space, he'd freeze at least. But Odo is one of my favorite characters and at this point in the series he's still a complete unknown. Enjoyed this one
Bloodletter - At least in this book they remembered that impulse engines hurt the Wormhole aliens, while in the TV series that seemed to have been forgotten, though at the same time the wormhole aliens had a pretty firm grasp of before/after in the book, considering they should have known even before Kira and Bashir entered what would happen, so they don't actually appear to know what will happen in the future after all. Apparently the wormhole can also spit you out in the future. Not sure all that made any sense. Storyline was ok with a lot of action, but nothing special. Remember, still early in the show so author had to make up a lot and characters were not formed yet.
