Resident Alien, Omnibus: Volume 1
Living undercover as a semi-retired, small-town doctor, a stranded alien's only hope is to stay off humanity's radar until he can be rescued. When he's pulled into a surprising murder mystery by the town's desperate mayor and struggling police chief, Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle learns more about the human condition than he ever wanted to.
This omnibus collects the first three Resident Alien graphic novels: Welcome to Earth!, The Suicide Blonde, and The Sam Hain Mystery - along with new introductions from the creators and a gallery featuring colour cover art from the original comic book run. A perfect, value-priced introduction to Dr. Harry's strange world and the unique comic series that is now a SyFy original show!

I've been watching the Resident Alien TV series for several years now. The humour is sometimes rather crude for my tastes and Harry is a bit over the top sometimes, but it also has some wonderful moments. I knew it was based on a graphic novel series, but it took me till now to locate it at a library so I can give it a try. Clearly what Harry looks like in alien form is very different so will see how else the two versions differ.
Turns out a lot. Instead of being a jerk, Harry is actually a kind of nice guy who is just trying to avoid detection while waiting to be rescued. He wasn't here to wipe out the Earth, he just needed to destroy some alien tech that shouldnt' fall into human hands. The young boy that can see him is a young girl in this book but she barely plays a role, maybe her ability will matter more in the future, but right now she's so young that when people tell her things are ok and normal she goes along with it. Asta is there and reasonably similar to the TV version, though her friend is there. And two white male cops, think they made the right choice to change that since one of my favorite characters in the show is the female cop.
I do like Harry better here. He's not an idiot, he's not totally awkward, he's kind rather than obnoxious. And each of the three stories collected in the omnibus is also a detective tale that Harry can't resist attempting to solve. Its more murder mystery than alien invasion. Curious to see how the series continues after these first three tales. After all the government is aware Harry is floating around somewhere out there and are attempting to track him down, what will happen if they do? Asta knows something is weird about Harry but not exactly what, she doesn't let him know she knows, what will happen when she does?
