This is a wonderful series! When I first saw the books, some pinks, all with glitter, I was a little dubious, you know, little girl with her sparkle pony making princess jokes. But it's nothing like that, Phoebe is a fun little nerd, generally playing video games and having adventures with her unicorn friend. In fact, it reminds me a lot of Calvin and Hobbes. Sure it's different, Calvin was a boy so he liked spaceships and building zombie snowmen. Phoebe is a girl, and her best friend is a unicorn. They have different things they worry about, but hey, where Calvin thought girls had cooties, Phoebe best human friend is a boy named Max.

The first book starts with an intro from none other than the author of The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle. And when we first meet Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, she's as vain and aloof as Beagle's unnamed Unicorn. In fact if the Unicorn had a sense of humour, she might be a lot like Marigold. I found it was impossible to put the first book down, what with Phoebe and her nine-year-old world, and Marigold, whose world, well, revolved around herself. But as the two become friends they learn from each other and learn to tolerate each other's quirks (Phoebe tends to pick her nose, Marigold tends to get stuck for hours staring at her reflection in pools of water).

As the series progresses we are introduced to Phoebe's nemesis, Dakota, the cool girl at school. And there's Max the geek, and thus admirable in Phoebe's eyes. Phoebe's parents show up regularly, her mother is an artist, her father is a software developer (which I am too so I enjoy his scenes). In the third book we are introduced to the Goblin species whose language consists of the single word "Blart!", and we run into the occasional dragon. And Simpson's artwork is just wonderful, her unicorn really is beautiful and her goblins are adorable.

The fifth book, The Magic Storm, and the either, Unicorn Theater, are a standalone graphic novels, while the rest are comic strips with at most a week long story arc. Of course, with any long running series like this it does get a bit repetitive as you go along, Marigold can only have so many vanity jokes and maybe I made a mistake to grab all of them at the same time when I saw them all on the shelf in the library. But I highly recommend them. These are comics for little girls, and grownup girls, and for boys and men, the little kids will miss some of the jokes that the adults will smirk at, but that's what makes a really good book like this, one that everyone can enjoy, whether it only gets a smile, or it brings on outright laughter.

Finally, in Today I'll be a Unicorn, we have a book targetted for toddlers, but seeing Phoebe and Marigold again was a treat. After all being a uicorn would be pretty great, until you realize you'll have to give up pizza to eat hay instead!

I hope there are many more of these books to come.
