The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern
Written in consultation with the creator of the world called Pern, Anne McCaffrey herself, this ultimate guidebook tells readers everything they ever wanted to know about their favorite world, much of which is not included in the novels themselves.
- The first exploration of the planet and the founding of the original human colony
- Pernese flora and fauna - native, imported and adapted
- The nature of Thread (including extensive Threadfall charts), the threat it poses, and ways to combat it
- The development of dragons from the little fire lizards to the huge, telepathic creatures that carry humans and fight Thread
- Life in the Weyrs: the care and feeding of dragons, the organization of dragons into fighting units, Weyr maintenance, and the leisure activities of Weyrmen and Weyrwomen.
- Life in Hold and Crafthall: government, agriculture, hunting, cookery, trading, art, homes, clothing, celebrations - and even a few recipes!
The Dragonlover's Guide welcomes you to Pern and invites you to return again and again and again!
The Atlas of Pern
The People of Pern
"In what started as a short story to improve the public image of the much maligned 'dragon'" says Anne McCaffrey in her introduction to The People of Pern, "I wrote Weyr Search, set on a planet orbiting the sun Rukbat which I located on the National Geographic Star Map in the lower left hand corner. One million words later, I'm not allowed to stop!"
According to Anne McCaffrey, in a world where there is so much trouble and pain, it is her intention to give people someplace where there is hope. And that is exactly what she has created for hundreds of readers of all ages in her many volumes of Pern including: Dragonflight, Dragonquest, The White Dragon, Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern and the Harper Hall trilogy, Dragonsong, Dragonsinger and Dragondrums.
Artist Robin Wood met Anne McCaffrey at the first totally Pern-oriented convention in the U.S., Istacon, held in Atlanta, Georgia in 1984. However, prior to that, Robin had designed and executed portraits of Pern characters for the Mayfair Games board game, Dragonriders of Pern. In the ensuing conversation about what the characters from the Pern books really looked like, The People of Pern was born. Four years of work followed, with Robin and Anne comparing notes at conventions, discussing details of Pern and its people, passing letters and sketches across the Atlantic and arriving at mutually satisfactory conclusions.
Donning/Starblaze is proud to present this first, authentic look at the people of Pern, a collaboration of the finest kind between two of the finest artists available today.
Pern, the third world of a golden, G-type star, was initially colonized from earth and is a place of Dragon Weyrs, Holds and Craft Halls. It is a colorful blend of Middle Ages, modernity and magic.
Dragonholder: The Life and Dream (so far) of Anne McCaffrey
The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern - Very interesting and fact filled guide for any hardcore fan of Pern. Must admit reading it from front to back was perhaps got a tad boring as it went along, but excellent reference guide for finding answers to any questions you might have from the biology to dragons, to what the people wear, to what they eat. You get this image of a feudal, medieval world but really, because Pern was settled by a group of advanced humans from many different races and nationalities, you find out that in the hot areas the women wear bikinis, and they have tech that maybe wouldn't otherwise be expected to pop up. Only thing I found lacking was the mapping between the animals names (like runnerbeast = horse and heardbeast = cow, but what are the sheep and goats that supposedly still remain?).
The People of Pern - This book is beautiful, the only thing wrong with it is that it was done fairly early on in the series, before Dragonsdawn so there are so many characters that are missing, and instead it includes some characters so minor I don't even remember them (though it's only 6 months since I read Dragonflight). You can really see the love both Wood and McCaffrey have for Robinton in his portrait. But if you get only one of the guides I would recommend this one, I can't say how much I love Wood's artwork.
