Smith's Vampire Diaries were the first vampire books I read after Dracula. I remember buying them secretly as a used bookstore and hid them away so my family wouldn't know I was reading "vampire" books (oh how trends have changed, vampires are mainstream now!). I absolutely loved that trilogy. But years passed and the terrible TV series came out (why, why, WHY make sexy Italian Rennaissance vampires into colonial American ones? How boring, and gives the impression that Americans will only watch stuff if its about themselves, sigh).

So I was leery of more Smith books, even though Night World was written long before. But rivetedlit.com put the first book up for free this month so of course I couldn't resist.

I didn't love Secret Vampire. Oh, the characters were ok, the worldbuilding interesting, but I get the eebie jeebies reading about people dying from cancer and that was just a depressing first half or so of the book. It of course picked up after that. Which means the rest of the series has promise. And know what, it wasn't as nearly sappy/angsty as many more modern young adult novels (I'm currently gagging my way through the Hush, Hush series). No insta-love here, these lovebirds were friends since childhood and it took time for the girl to realize that the guy had a thing for her, and that just maybe, she had a thing for him. So I'll eventually hunt around for other books in the series, it's not my priority but I would like to learn a little more about this Night World.
