This Terres d'Arran series is written in parallel along with Elfes and Orcs & Gobelins, and since everything is all in the same world, there is a little crossover, such as Redwin fighting alongside the elves in the ghoul wars. Though strangely, the ghouls themselves don't seem to bother the dwarves as pretty much all these tales are ghoul free. Guess that's why only Redwin showed up in the Elfes series.

Thus instead we focus on individual dwarves. I guess there's something about the dwarven personality to cause them to hate their fathers and to rebel against their teachings, since that's a pretty common theme (even for the daughters sometimes). There is a fair amount of angst, lots of anger, then a lot of regret. They also seem for the most part either want to reach the top of their social structure, or tear it down. I guess that's why they didn't need a ghoul war, there was plenty of conflict just amongst themselves. Though there are three other necromancers that show up in a couple books for the dwarves to fight, mostly a side thing, dwelt with mainly off page, but get referenced in quite a few of the books over time.

There are some unifying factors, such as Redwin, from the first book, is the father or Jorunn from the sixth book (actually kind of loved seeing cigar smoking dwaves, for some reason I found that very amusing). As I went along I regretted not keeping track of the family trees and who-is-who because a minor character in one book shows up in another and that just adds a richness to the overall world, a continuity that makes it less a bunch of random episodes but rather an overall story arc.

So while the dwarf stories tend to be repetitive in plot, I'm still enjoying them, and hoping to see more cross overs from the other series!

Wait, did I say repetitive? In a way yes it definitely started that way but as it goes along that changes and added more and more variety, such as Ararun, who along with a blue elfe, is a member of the guard and is task to solve a mystery. I'd totally read a series just dedicated to this pair solving mysteries. And Tadgar who is the leader of a band of misfits who try one get rich quick trick after another, resulting in wiping out an entire city. Even his hijinks are limited to a single novel.

I was never a dwarf fan before, but I've grown to appreciate them now, there hasn't been a new addition in the past year but I hope that doesn't mean there won't be more!
