I started off my aventures with Moomin with the second volume of the comic strip collection. Most likely not the place to start but it was what I found in the library first. Took me a little while to learn the large cast of characters, to understand their personalities and how their world worked, but as I started getting deeper into it I really started to enjoy them, in fact I wouldn't mind being able to live like a Moomin! I'm not quite sure where they get their money, but while they have a million misadventures they seem to be able to refund people well enough for any damages done. And they are so generous they occasionally give away just about everything in their house if someone asks (they do need to learn how to say "no" a little better hehe). The only downside of the book was the fact it was absolutly massive, I had to sit in all kinds of weird positions to read it since I couldn't hold it in my hands. But just the same, I'm going to see if the library has the first volume as well, since this crazy family is worth the effort.

Oh, the one thing I haven't figured out yet...I know the Moomins are trolls, but what are everyone else, and are there any humans about? Sniff looks like an aardvark, Stinky looks like one of those coal creatures from Spirited Away, and the rest are stranger still.

I then went back to the beginning with the novels. It was interesting to see the family evolve, in the first book, The Moomins and the Great Flood they are almost unrecognizable both in the story and in the artwork. But as each book progressed they became more and more the Moomins I met in the comics, and each book introduced more and more of the characters such as Snufkin or Little My. But one thing never fails, the ultimate kindness of the Moomins, and how they manage to take terrible events as they come and make the best of them. Of course a lot of the time the stories are just downright silly or absurd, and sometimes I had to worry the Moomins would be so generous they themselves would starve. But somehow they always pull through and remind us not to put too much emphasis on possessions.

The artwork is wonderful, and to answer my other question, no I don't think there are any humans, at least not in the valley, pretty much everyone has a tail or "paws" even if they appear mostly human on the surface.

And then of course all the wondeful picture books for kids. Tove Jansson of course passed away in 2001 so she's clearly not in fact the author of the books that came out ten years later but they are such iconic characters I'm not surprised new books keep getting created so that the next generation can be exposed to them. I can only say I'm a bit sad I didn't encounter them when I was a kid, I grew up with Barbapapa instead!
