Thus far I've only managed to get my hands on the fourth book but it's a simple enough (and repeated enough) concept. A school for magical equines that are split up into houses which cause powerful friendships to blossom and they go on adventures with each other and prove themselves as some of the best in the school. There are at least five such series, seems to be a really popular theme in the past 5-10 years or so for some reason. But then I have been enjoying all these series so maybe for good reason they are getting a lot of attention lately, at least until the new trend comes along.
I particularly liked this one because these unicorn schools tend to be directed towards girls which results in all female casts (both human and unicorn) with maybe a boy showing up here or there lurking in a dark corner, here we have a male unicorn as a main character and part of the main group of four. While I do think female characters need some limelight, I don't think it means male characters should cease to exist. In fact if we had more mixed protagonists, we'd probably have more books that BOTH girls and boys can enjoy.
Anyway, while I obviously can't comment on the entire series at this time, I did like the world and the cast of characters, each with their own personality and powers. I also really liked the colourful illustrations. So many illustrators can't get equine shapes right, attaching their legs at weird angles with awkward joints, but I thought the unicorns were really beautiful here and I liked just looking at the pictures. And this fourth book had a twist ending that even I didn't see coming!
