I'm doing an SF-themed reading year and didn't want to limit myself to a single language, nor to a single format. When I stumbled upon this French graphic novel series at the library it was just perfect. The illustrations are bright and beautiful and you are immediately pulled in to the mystery of the giant creature that lives in the sea that can turn the ocean to gel and created fantastic forms. Talking of fantastic forms, the other creatures of this world! Giant floating beasts that never come to land, and ocean creatures that look freakishly human and just like to stare at you from the water.

But aside from the mystery of the creature and the fantastical world of Aldebaran, I didn't find the story all that interesting. I mean Marc ended up in prison for a while, escaped and had to hid in various people's homes, he got to have sex (or at least tried to) with at least four or five different women. This world is more open to sexual partners and in fact their small population encourages people to reproduce for the survival of the colony. But I just wanted to know more about this ocean creature that takes so many form as its lifecycle progresses. Marc's bedrooms shenanigans were just distractions.

The other thing that kind of confused me was that while this book was written in France, in French, all the street and shop signs were in English and the names were predominantly not French. Oddly I picked up another French book, a novel this time and written in Quebec and discovered a similiar pattern. Note that neither author was native French, one is Brazilian, the other Hungarian.

Thus in the first five books on Aldebaran we try to unravel the mystery of the creature, bring down an increasingly corrupt government, and hope that some day, contact will Earth will be reestablied. In the next five on Betelgeuse, we jump to Betelgeuse. A colony ship that had been headed there stopped transmitting and no one knows what happened to them. In addition to that, the creature has, in its bizarre lifecycle, been transmitting signals to that star system. Coincidence? Obviously no one thinks that. So happily, while I knew the books were all in the same "world", I wasn't sure that there would be closer ties than that. And again, wonderfully creating landscapes and creatures populate this world as well. Leo likes giving his animals rather human-like faces, which just adds a bit of creep factor and even more alieness. If I remember nothing else from these books I'll remember that weird fish from the first book...as the world expands, I'm actually getting more and more interested.

Next six take us to Antares, at yet another attempt to start a new colony. Not only do the colonists have to deal with dangerous fauna and flora (and tiny metallic flying devices and creatures that vanish into thin air), but it was the human element that was most terrifying here, a religious sect believing themselves superior to all and express this by forcing women to submit to humiliations, hiding their bodies in balloon suits, shaving their heads. Obviously our brave heroines from the previous adventures aren't going to be putting up with that! You know at first I was like, huh, this is interesting enough but I'm mostly into the bizarre creatures. However after spending so much time with the main characters, well, now I want to know more about them and what happens next. There are still a lot of books to go but soon I'll have caught up and will have to wait for each new issue, oh no!

The next five changes things up a bit in Survivants and follows the story of a new set of characters, while travelling to Aldebaran their ship encounters a quantum fluctuation and are forced to crash land on an alien planet where they discover they are not alone, the region around this space has affected ships from many alien races and they are all either deciding to settle on the planet or to find their way off. There are also time distortions to be wary of, passing through one may make you experience a day but everyone else will think you've been gone six years. As usual LEO is creative in his aliens and landscapes and the challenges he sets for his characters, but underneath it all, its a very human story, dealing with love, sorrow, pain, fear and anger and overcoming them.

After that, the three Retour sur Aldebaran bring Kim and Manon together in another adventure across worlds. A strange cube that was discovered on Aldebaran turns out to be portal to another planet, where a primitive society is apparantly protected by one even more far advanced than the aliens we've encountered so far, and a surprising discovery is made about the ancestry of these aliens, and perhaps, of humans as well. Running through this is the human distrust of the unknown, of religious fanaticism and xenophobia. A lot to pack into three books!

Neptune starts us off with another mystery, an alien ship is in orbit of the gas giant, and there appear to be humans aboard, as well as a section filled with robots...but that's all we know for now, need to pause here and wait for more of the series to be written!!!
