The City that Speaks to the Sky
Follow the journey of the amnesic ronin Raido in a medieval Japan where spirits still exert their magic on the land.
Raido, a young amnesic Ronin–a masterless Samurai–roams about in a quest for his memories. His first stop is the city that talks to the sky, the ultimate stronghold against the ice invading the land of the rising sun. There, he meets Meiki, a graceful puppeteer and storyteller of charms.
"Legend of the Scarlet Blades," as painted by the tormented and airy style of Saverio Tenuta, is a series whose universe is inspired by feudal Japanese history and traditions, full of breathtaking settings and populated by a myriad of wondrous mythical beings.

Kamigakushi
Since the dawn of time, the Izuna wolves have been entrusted as guardians against Japan's evil spirits. Set in the wondrous world of Legend of the Scarlet Blades.
From time immemorial, the spirits of nature created the Kamigakushi, a magical veil that hid them from the impure eyes of man. From that moment on, spirits and men could no longer gaze upon each other and lived as if belonging to separate worlds. One day, the Noggo appeared suddenly. No one knows how they came into being, but their harmful darkness began to infect the world of the Kami. That is why the sacred tree called Munemori created the Izuna, the only ones capable of battling the terrible scourge of the Noggo.
But the mysterious birth of a wolf cub in the shape of a young girl threatens to upset the delicate balance between the two worlds and plunge both sides into chaos.

My library is associated with a website called Hoopla that allows you six borrows a month, but now and then there are "free" borrows that don't count towards that six. And that's how I came to borrow the first in this series, I hadn't heard of this series before and I love stories set in feudal Japan.
I'm not sure I loved the first quartet. While the artwork was stunning, and the tale a complex one to resolve I think I was a bit overwhelmed by the violence, gore and horror. Here we have a tale of an amnesiac ronin with a pair of powerful magical blades and only one arm. However I loved the Izuna quartet which takes place before the Scarlet Blades. The spirit wolves, the Izunas, are beautiful creatures and I was glad to learn more about them. Finally in the third quartet, The Mask of Fudo, it focuses on the origins of a villain from Scarlet Blades and how he became the masked monster that we saw there. This one left me confused at times, but by this point I had already been drawn into the world of kami, magic, ninjas and samurai. This third set tied the first and second together in the chronology.
I don't know what else to say other than to repeat the artwork was beautiful. Watercolours, magical, atmospheric and at times terrying. If the artist decides to write more in this world I'll be happy to read them, though I suspect that the tale is quite complete now.
