I decided to do a year long theme of reading unicorn books so when this was on a shelf in the library I just grabbed it. Turned out it was the second book but I put the first and third book on reserve assuming I could get them quick. Instead, I had to read the second book first, but that's not a big deal, not only is there a summary of what happened in the previous book, the books are short (meant for early readers) so I didn't miss much.

I was suprised to find the french to have more unknown words in a book directed towards 7-year-olds than I found reading a book directed at teens, but I could figure everything out from context, didn't have to reach for a dictionary!

The story is about a young man who lives in a world in which there are wild herds of unicorns. He befriends one and it is kidnapped. He heads out on his own to find her, along the way running into a hunchback who joins him in his journey. The artwork is lovely, kind of stylized but so nice to look at that I found when I finished reading the text on a page I would stop to admire the pictures.

Seeing as I've only read the middle book, I'll wait till I get the other two to comment on the quality of the story line, but so far so good, you have the hunt to find the unicorn, there's a ship with shady characters, a mysterious ally, a continent where people go but never come back from. I know I want to read more!

-------

Got my hands on the first and third books, I am still adoring the art, going back after I finish reading just to look at the pictures again. Unfortunately this is not a trilogy and it ends on a very interesting note, with our characters finding themselves in a strange land where people are strangely shaped, that live in trees, and seem to know Kalyane! It seems like the rest hasn't even been written yet, in fact I'm finding many unicorn series never get finished by their authors (Balinor, Killer Unicorns, The Particolored Unicorn) so I hope this won't be one of those! After all we've just met our villain, the Man with No Name, who also has no face, and we want to see him defeated, and maybe have his nature explained.

-------

Got the fourth book in July, newly published. Just as beautifully illustrated as the other three and potentially the last in the series. There is a great climatic battle and though not everything gets resolved the series could easily end on this note, leaving readers to imagine what the future may hold for these characters.
