It had been a while since I read anything in French, and since this didn't have an English translation it seemed the prefect choice. Originally written in Italien, it was a nice change that the story takes place in Rome, rather than the more familiar U.K. or U.S. locations where most English language fantasy books seem to take place in. But at the same time, it still felt very familiar.

We have a young girl living in an orphanage (since no matter the language, all special children destined for great battles don't appear to have parents...maybe because their parents wouldn't let their kids go off to fight dragons on their own??) who is finally adopted just at she thinks she is too old to ever be chosen. The Professor seems a little eccentric but nice enough, however she eventually learns that she has the soul of a dragon within her, and she must find the fruits of the World Tree before the evil wyvern Nidhoggr can free himself from the prison the dragon Thuban bound him in.

There's definitely a Norse flavour to the mythology and I look forward to reading the rest of the series. Much as I usually get annoyed by young female characters that spend most of their time complaining they are not good enough, not brave enough, not pretty enough, not talented enough...yeah, it went on and on, maybe because it was in French it didn't get on my nerves quite as much. And a big part of the book is the other characters, including Thuban, trying to knock some sense into her, that she isn't a total failure, she has her own skills and just needs time to grow into her powers.
