The Lost Hero
JASON HAS A PROBLEM. He doesn’t remember anything before waking up in a bus full of kids on a field trip. Apparently he has a girlfriend named Piper, and his best friend is a guy named Leo. They’re all students at the Wilderness School, a boarding school for “bad kids," as Leo puts it. What did Jason do to end up here? And where is here, exactly? Jason doesn't know anything—except that everything seems very wrong.
PIPER HAS A SECRET. Her father has been missing for three days, ever since she had that terrifying nightmare about his being in trouble. Piper doesn’t understand her dream, or why her boyfriend suddenly doesn’t recognize her. When a freak storm hits during the school trip, unleashing strange creatures and whisking her, Jason, and Leo away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood, she has a feeling she’s going to find out, whether she wants to or not.
LEO HAS A WAY WITH TOOLS. When he sees his cabin at Camp Half-Blood, filled with power tools and machine parts, he feels right at home. But there’s weird stuff, too—like the curse everyone keeps talking about, and some camper who's gone missing. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist that each of them—including Leo—is related to a god. Does this have anything to do with Jason's amnesia, or the fact that Leo keeps seeing ghosts?
Join new and old friends from Camp Half-Blood in this thrilling first book in The Heroes of Olympus series. Best-selling author Rick Riordan has pumped up the action, humor, suspense, and mystery in an epic adventure that will leave readers panting for the next installment.
The Son of Neptune
PERCY IS CONFUSED. When he awoke from his long sleep, he didn't know much more than his name. His brain fuzz is lingering, even after the wolf Lupa told him he is a demigod and trained him to fight with the pen/sword in his pocket. Somehow Percy manages to make it to a camp for half-bloods, despite the fact that he has to keep killing monsters along the way. But the camp doesn't ring any bells with him. The only thing he can recall from his past is another name: Annabeth.
HAZEL IS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD. When she lived before, she didn't do a very good job of it. Sure, she was an obedient daughter, even when her mother was possessed by greed. But that was the problem—when the Voice took over her mother and commanded Hazel to use her "gift" for an evil purpose, Hazel couldn't say no. Now because of her mistake, the future of the world is at risk. Hazel wishes she could ride away from it all on the stallion that appears in her dreams.
FRANK IS A KLUTZ. His grandmother says he is descended from heroes and can be anything he wants to be, but he doesn't see it. He doesn't even know who his father is. He keeps hoping Apollo will claim him, because the only thing he is good at is archery—although not good enough to win camp war games. His bulky physique makes him feel like an ox, especially in front of Hazel, his closest friend at camp. He trusts her completely—enough to share the secret he holds close to his heart.
Beginning at the "other" camp for half-bloods and extending as far as the land beyond the gods, this breathtaking second installment of the Heroes of Olympus series introduces new demigods, revives fearsome monsters, and features other remarkable creatures, all destined to play a part in the Prophesy of Seven.
The Mark of Athena
Annabeth is terrified. Just when she's about to be reunited with Percy, it looks like Camp Jupiter is planning for war. And that's only one of her worries. In her pocket, Annabeth carries a gift from her mother that came with an unnerving command: Follow the Mark of Athena. Avenge me. Annabeth already feels weighed down by the prophecy that will send seven demigods on a quest to find - and close - the Doors of Death. Annabeth's biggest fear, though, is that Percy might have changed. What if he's now attached to Roman way and no longer needs his old friends?
Narrated by different demigods, The Mark of Athena is an unforgettable journey across land and sea to Rome, where important discoveries, surprising sacrifices, and unspeakable horrors await.
The House of Hades
The demigod crew of the Argo II is standing at a crossroads. They could return home with the Athena Parthenon statue and try to stop Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter from going to war. Or they could continue on their quest to find the House of Hades, where they might be able to open the Doors of Death, rescue their friends Percy and Annabeth from Tartarus (if they have survived), and prevent monsters from being reincarnated in the mortal world. Whichever road they decide to take, they have to hurry, because time is running out. Gaea, the bloodthirsty Earth Mother, has set the date of August 1 for her rise of power.
Join the demigods of the prophecy as they face their biggest challenges yet in The House of Hades, the hair-raising penultimate book in the best-selling Heroes of Olympus series.
The Blood of Olympus
Nico had warned them. Going through the House of Hades would stir the demigods' worst memories. Their ghosts would become restless. Nico may actually become a ghost if he has to shadow-travel with Reyna and Coach Hedge one more time. But that might be better than the alternative: allowing someone else to die, as Hades foretold.
Jason's ghost is his mother, who abandoned him when he was little. He may not know how he is going to prove himself as a leader, but he does know that he will not break promises like she did. He will complete his line of the prophecy: To storm or fire the world must fall.
Reyna fears the ghosts of her ancestors, who radiate anger. But she can't allow them to distract her from getting the Athena Parthenos to Camp Half-Blood before war breaks out between the Romans and Greeks. Will she have enough strength to succeed, especially with a deadly hunter on her trail?
Leo fears that his plan won't work, that his friends might interfere. But there is no other way. All of them know that one of the Seven has to die in order to defeat Gaea, the Earth Mother.
Piper must learn to give herself over to fear. Only then will she be able to do her part at the end: utter a single word.
Heroes, gods, and monsters all have a role to play in the climactic fulfillment of the prophecy in The Blood of Olympus, the electrifying finale of the best-selling Heroes of Olympus series.
The Demigod Diaries
Young demigods, your destiny awaits!
You must prepare yourself for a difficult future: fighting monsters, adventuring across the globe, and dealing with temperamental Greek and Roman gods. In this top secret colelction of four never-before-told stories, character portraits and interviews, maps, diagrams, and puzzles from Camp Half-Blood Senior Scribe Rick Riordan, you'll join your favorite demigods from the Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus series as they face dangerous foes and perilous tasks. What you learn from their experience could very well save your life!
Demigods & Magicians
Magic, monsters, and mayhem abound when Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase meet Carter and Sadie Kane for the first time. Weird creatures are appearing in unexpected places, and the demigods and magicians have to team up to take them down. As they battle with Celestial Bronze and glowing hieroglyphs, the four heroes find that they have a lot in common--and more power than they ever thought possible. But will their combined forces be enough to foil an ancient enemy who is mixing Greek and Egyptian incantations for an evil purpose? Rick Riordan wields his usual storytelling magic in this adrenaline-fueled adventure.
It's been a while since I was able to get back to Percy's world of gods and monsters, but I wanted to wait for the series to be complete before jumping in since I knew I would be able to wait between books. And it was worth the wait, a whole new cast of characters along with the return of some familiar faces. In this series we delve into the dual nature of the Greek gods who were adapted and changed by the Romans...and what exactly does that mean for the gods themselves to have this kind of split personality (apparently it will matter quite a lot as the series goes along).
This series takes place a few years after the first one did, so in a sense, the charactes have gone from middle-grade to young adult. While Annabeth has always been Percy's girlfriend, Percy finds himself thinking of settling down already (given the short lifespans of demigod's, one has to consider having a family pretty early). We also get to encounter a huge variety of characters from Greek mythology from well known ones like Hercules to others I've never run across before (and who are pissed at being forgotten).
Of course, in the midst of all the series life-and-death stuff, there is plenty of humour which made me laugh out loud several times, and there were moments where I had to read out a couple lines to someone in my house. And there are a whole bunch of Canadian references! From one major character that comes from Vancouver, to finding out that the god of the north wind Boreas lives in the attic of the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City (wonder what he does in the summer though, sure Canada is cold in the winter, but it can get hotter than Jamaica in the summer!), and a Montreal reference that popped up when the villains were claiming parts of the world they wanted to own. Being Canadian it made me happy, though I had to cringe at the stereotypes (the dumb hockey loving, pizza eating son of Boreas...but then I guess all the rest of the characters are equally ridiculous so it's fair game).
By the end of the series I really didn't want it to stop. I was really into the world, Riordan came up with a great cast of characters, ok sure, the gods/monsters were ridiculous and often silly (they tricked Nyx by pretending to be tourists, and being vain, she wanted to know why she wasn't on the main tourist loop, etc) but at times he could be insightful as to how certain gods and monsters might adapt to the modern world, other times it was just goofy. I don't know if every one of these books should have won the Goodreads Choice Awards every year, I mean there are other middle grade books out there, but they are actually very good and I really enjoyed my romp through Greek/Roman mythology.
And of course to wrap up, there is the companion book, The Demigod Diaries, where you can read four short stories and a few games:
- The Diary of Luke Castellan - goes back to the original series and give us Luke, Thalia and Annabeth's origin story
- Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes - just a fun side story, taking place between the two series
- Leo Valdez and the quest for Buford - a silly story of a table that ran away, but then becomes quickly series when the Maenads show up
- Son of Magic - written by Riordan's son (for whom Riordan originally invent Percy Jackson), now 16 himself, about one of the demigods that fought on the side of Kronos and what happened to him after he lost, it was interesting because it was noticeably a different style, don't think there was anything funny in it at all, but at the same time expands the world in a meaningful way.
Looking forward to tackling the Magnus Chase series next year and learning more on the Norse gods, though I'm also eager to get to the Apollo series as that one clearly continues from the end of The Heroes of Olympus as we are left wondering what punishment Apollo will suffer.
The companion book, Demigods & Magicians takes place right after the end of The Heroes of Olympus and is an interesting trilogy of three short stories where the Greek Demigods have to work together with the Egyptians Magicians, Riordan's other series. The downside of buying this little book was that all the stories were included with the other books, there wasn't even one story that was specific to this edition, if I had known that I would have saved myself some money!
