Original Sin
The Devil You Know
To Hell and Back
It's been a long and difficult road for John Constantine – one that's left him with demon's blood in his veins and dead friends' voices in his head.
Still, with his sharp tongue and unequaled shrewdness, the sorcerer from Liverpool has manged to raise himself to a position as rarefied as it is dangerous: being the magician of last resort for a world under constant siege from the forces of chaos and evil. That same rough path has also sharpened his mind, and taught him a thing or two about ruthlessness. Now, with the outcome of an ancient prophecy hanging on his actions, it's time for Constantine to bring the scales of justice back into balance – at Hell's expense.
Continuing the collection of original Hellblazer writer Jaime Delano's celebrated run on this signature Vertigo series. Collecting: Hellblazer 10-13, Annual 1; The Horrorist 1-2
The Fear Machine
In The Fear Machine, John Constantine looks for a way to reconnect to humanity -- but how can such a man ever find inner peace? Constantine finds himself encamped with a new-age pagan group that's tapping into their own psychic abilities -- but a defense contractor is out to exploit their powers. Is the company's aim just political, or is it something much more sinister?
Collecting: Hellblazer 14-22
The Family Man
Dangerous Habits
After surviving confrontations with demos, elementals, cultists and serial killers, John Constantine now faces the one enemy he can't outrun or outwit - his own malfunctioning flesh.
Decades of chain smoking have taken their inevitable toll, and Constantine's tortured lungs have blossomed into malignancy. The world's greatest magician has, at the most, two months left before his body gives up the ghost, and he knows exactly what will happen after that. The ruler of Hell has some very special plans for the soul of John Constantine - and eternity itself may not be enough time to undertake all of the tortures he is readying.
Bloodlines
Tainted Love
John Constatine celebrates his fortieth birthday alongside his friends and loved ones, including Swamp Thing and Zatanna. However, things never burn bright too long for John Constantine, and he soons finds himself at his lowest point ever. Drunk and homeless, John must pull himself together if he is going to survive against the King of the Vampires, who comes looking for his blood.
Collecting: Hellblazer 62-71, Special 1; Vertigo Jam 1
Rake at the Gates of Hell
After twice outwitting and humiliating the Prince of Darkness, John Constantine isn't anxious to make a third attempt - but he hasn't got much of a choice. Finally freed from his stand-off in Hell, the Devil is coming to collect, and nothing on God's Earth can stand in his way. Of course, Constantine's not going down without a fight, but he knows better than anyone that you can only beat the odds so many times. In the end, all you can do is prepare yourself for the worst, and make peace with those that will be left behind.
Unfortunately, when the Devil comes to town, "peace" is never what follows.
Critical Mass
In " Warped Notions," written by Eddie Campbell, Constantine is drawn into a web of time travel and terror when he's accosted by the ghost of Sir Francis Dashwood, the founder of the Hellfire Club. Dashwood needs Constantine's help to avert a disaster that could threaten the very fabric of reality. Then, Paul Jenkins begins his Hellblazer run with "Dreamtime"! John Constantine plunges deep into an arcane landscape where a powerful entity known as the Rainbow Serpent intends to punish man's treatment of the environment by clearing the earth of all animal life.
Collecting: Hellblazer 84-96
In the Line of Fire
In this new Hellblazer collection, John Constantine comes to the aid of his downstairs neighbor, a dimwitted, epileptic giant whose home is haunted by a persistent ghost. Plus, John's affinity with the supernatural spoils a soccer game when a demon that thrives on hooliganism shows up. And in the story "Difficult Beginnings," Constantine must reconnect with the darker side of his own nature - a journey that leads him to the "most evil man in the world."
Collecting: Hellblazer 97-107

Going Down
Jump into the opening chapter of this wickedly funny and racy modern reintroduction of John Constantine!
The dead can’t die again—even within the supernatural circles that surround John Constantine, some things are impossible. But when the ghosts that haunt the occult detective start being murdered, it becomes clear the rules have changed. Far worse than ordinary death, this second death means oblivion—no afterlife, no way back. To stop it, Constantine must explore the barriers between the mundane and the extraordinary: the thin places.
The investigation takes the Hellblazer from New York City back home to London, where he joins up with an old rival, now an exorcist in Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Their dark, tangled history together is filled with music and magic, failed friendships and disastrous romance.
But even if Constantine somehow survives the supernatural serial killer, the price involved could leave whatever’s left of his soul beaten and broken.
Constantine: The Hellblazer, Volume 1: Going Down, by celebrated writers Ming Doyle (The Kitchen) and James Tynion IV (Batman Eternal) and acclaimed artists Riley Rossmo (Proof) and Vanessa Del Rey (Hit).

Marks of Woe
John Constantine is back in London, back to his old tricks and just in time, as things have become very dark indeed in his old stomping grounds. A small-time gang lord has found himself dealing with a big-time outbreak of supernatural weirdness and, without any allies to call on and nothing left to call his own, John doesn t have much choice about taking a paycheck from one of London s worst, or accepting the help of one of the gang lord s would-be foot soldiers. But what should be an open-and-shut exorcism turns out to be nothing but and madness is just getting started! The original Constantine is back in this series from Si Spurrier (The Dreaming) and Aaron Campbell (Infidel), with nothing to his name but decades of bad memories and an unearned second chance. How, exactly, will he squander it? There s only one way to find out

Dead in America

It's been a bit of a roundabout path that led me here. I started the Lucifer TV series, which led me to Gaiman's Sandman. From there I found the Sandman Universe books, which led me back to Lucifer. Along the way I found The Books of Magic. And scattered around in there the character of Constantine would pop up up now and then, and I did like the movie so I thought why not, I'm this deep into all these Vertigo crossovers, might as well see where Constantine started.
I thought Lucifer dark, and same with The Corinthian but the first book of the Constantine series was the darkest and the grittest of them. It was also the one that felt the most like a comic book rather than a graphic novel, it had that sketchy kind of artwork and the basic colouring techniques (people's clothes will even change colour from square to square). While the Constantine of the comics has a better sense of humour than the Keanu Reeves version, he was equally messed up, one time jumping out of a train because he forgot where he was and wanted to get away from his own thoughts. He smokes, he drinks, and apparently has quite the reputation for sex as well, though that was more mentioned about his past than on the page.
And here I thought Lucifer was a long storyline, with 13 or so books, but that just scratches the surface of the Constantine comics. Well, will see how far I get.
Already in book 2 I'm seeing a huge difference in style and not sure I particularly love it. Some of the story arcs are more random stream of conciousness than actual plots. Some are still kinda dramatic but wouldn't say they actually go somewhere or totally makes sense (at least not with some for of drug induced change in the functioning of one's mind). He even gets into the mind of a being who seems to be a kind of embodiement of despair, and pops out the other side feeling better about himself. The whole thing was pretty trippy. There's also fair amount of politics and commentary on what was going on in the world at the time, and I was too young at the time to care much about say Thatcher's political views. I thought it was cool she was a female leader, the world has so few, but she comes off like modern day Trump (rightly or wrongly I don't know), even the whole Make Britain Great Again which had me break out laughing and realizing that history rarely comes up with something new, it really does repeat.
I had to skip book 4 since both my libraries had it out on loan and jumped to 5, which turned out ok since nothing seem to reference 4, it felt like it picked up after 3. One thing I liked about 5 is that Ennis took over the story telling. Suddenly instead of what felt like drug induced trips they felt like actual stories. In fact I could see where bits and pieces from his first story were used to put together the Constantine movie, right down to the devil leaking black blood (I never understood that bit from the movie, icky and scary sure but otherwise why?). So I have some hope of enjoying the series more going forward.
