We had hints of something brewing in the background in the other series, in each of them (Elfes, Nain, Mages and especially Orcs & Gobelins) there were clues that human kings rulers no longer wanted to share the world with the ancient races and wanted to wipe them out. After some of the events blamed on those races, such as the ghouls raised by a elf necromancer, the humans no longer wanted to be on the receiving end. Not that humans are all saints but to be fair, all the near world ending events were trigged by the action of the elves, of course it is also the elves that came to the rescue as well, but one doesn't take that into account when seeking someone to blame.
Now several books in the various series are subtitled Guerres d'Arran, so its a bit hard to put a clear set of books together here, but I figured if there was one that was part of this separate series there will likely be more. In this book, we have a mix of races all coming together. Plus the invention of yet another kind of elf, and something called a Lutann which is a bit like a badass hobbit...I didn't much like yanking in these new races out of nowhere, I felt they needed some introduction before being pulled into a crossover novel.
But not only did we also have familiar races, we had many familiar characters all joining together to take a stand against those that would exterminate them.
The main downside? This storyline has just barely started, its likely going to be years before it wraps up. After reading about 100 books in one year, waiting for the next installments will be torture! Who thought that when I picked up a random "Elfes" book from the library, and only because I decided to read a bunch of Faerie books I owned, that I would get so caught up in this epic series! I don't think many can be had in English, but if you can read French, wow, this is one expansive and rich world and complex stories. I wonder if when they started did they realize how huge this was going to be!
June 2024
Finally got my hands on the next book after 6 months. The one downside of a 100+ epic graphic novel series is that you start to forget bits and pieces. I couldn't remember some of the characters though one of two of those were pretty important (the orcs in particular are starting to flow one into the other). But this was a big book, coming in at over 80 pages of amazing illustrations. And I love how all the characters are coming together, crossing paths, as they battle against, well, extinction. A classic tale of building up an army of people who normally would never work together, taking a ragtag bunch of exiles and homeless and creating a resistance. And of course some last minute aid from a dragon never hurts. For as long as they publish this series I'm going to keep reading it, and when they are done, I'll just start all over again!
