Garfield at Large / Garfield Gains Weight / Garfield Bigger than Life
Witty, urbane, sassy, and downright delightful, Garfield was born (where else?) in the cozy kitchen of an Italian restaurant on a cold winter's night in 1978. When the restaurant owner sold him to a pet store, "little" Garfiel thought he was history. Instead he made it...
For on that fateful day, a hapless gentleman named Jon Arbuckle walked through the pet shop doors. Believe it or not, Garfield weighed five pounds, six ounces then. But thanks to a wonderfully obsessive passion for pasta, he quickly blossomed into America's #1 fat cat. Lasagnas beware.
Garfield Weighs In / Garfield Eats His Heart Out
Lock up the lasagna, chain the chicken, and hold on to your funny bone. America's favorite cat is hungrier, funnier, lazier, grouchier, and more lovable than ever! Watch (and watch out!) as this champion heavyweight fights fleas, battles the Sludge Monster, falls head over tail in love, gets hijacked by a duck, visits a psychiatrist - among other antics - all in the name of laughs!
Garfield takes the Cake
It's a whirlwind time for our #1 cat as he...
Meets a long lost relative...
Falls head over tail in love...
Gets hijacked by a duck...
Escapes from the city pound...
And as always, manages to fit in plenty of food, sleep and sass! He's a fast talking, late-sleeping, cynical, lovable cat. He hassles Odie, Jon and Nermal and enchants kids of all ages. Riding on the crest of four big best sellers, he's back - better, fatter, and funnier than ever before!
Garfield Sits Around the House
See the famous furry feline as he...goes fishing...asks a vital question...faces another week...eats his birthday cake...and of course, he's as sassy and lovable as ever when he chases Odie, plays with Nermal and Pooky, and makes like both wicked and wonderful for his owner, Jon. Here is Garfield in his funniest book yet!!
Garfield Tips the Scales
Garfield Makes it Big / Garfield Rolls On / Garfield Out to Lunch
America's #1 favorite feline devours triple helpings of lasagna in one fell swoop, so it's no wonder that three delicious collections in one chubby volume would be just as appetizing! So whether he's surfing the birdbath, kicking Odie to new heights, or crooning by the light of the moon, Garfield shows us that three books in one is the way to go.
Garfield Swallows His Pride
Here's Garfield at his most appealing. Debonair, wise beyond his years - and funny! When you crave sarcasm, rapier wit, pithy comments, and lots of belly laughs, Garfield's the one who has it all! So take a look inside at the latest collection of vignettes from the life of the most lovable cat around.
Garfield Rounds Out
On a diet or swallowing a lasagna whole, he's still the same lovable Garfield. Getting in over his scruffy neck and sassing his way back out again, this is one scrappy cat who knows how to have fun. It's only fair to warn you that Garfield offers more giggles per pound than any other guy around.
Garfield Hangs Out
Down on the farm, lost in a world of his own, or camping out with the gang, Garfield always finds a way to keep life interesting. Now that mgiht be bad news for Jon and Odie, but it's great for the rest of his millions of fans, as Garfield takes the spotlight for his nineteenth star turn. Or, as Garfield might say, when the going gets tough, the tough takes a nap.
Garfield Takes Up Space
Garfield knows what matters in life - whether he's stealing Jon's dinner, performing for his favorite audience, or simply pondering the vastness of space. And he must be doing something right, because this is his 20th book and he's still going strong. Live it up, Garfield, and take your millions of fans along for the ride!
Garfield Says a Mouthful
He's a simple cat. He enjoys long naps, big dinners, and watching Jon fall flat on his face. But whether he's setting a trap for the mailman, stalking the great unknown chips bag, or helping Jon discover his artistic side, Garfield knows what to do and he knows how to do it - with style.
Garfield by the Pound
Garfield, the furry food processor, is back for another helping of tastefully outrageous fun! And America's most-famished feline is breaking all records for mealtime mayhem! Whether he's snatching a snooze, drop-kicking the dog, or discovering the joys of a simple tummy scratch, Garfield always knows where his next nibbles is coming from. If you're hungry for laughter, you'll eat him up. Pound for pound, there's no funnier cat around!
Garfield Takes His Licks
Just as day becomes night, summer becomes fall, and breakfast becomes lunch (with ample time for snacks in between!), Garfield becomes plumper and funnier with every meal he devours, and every practical joke he performs. So whether he's nudging Odie off the coffee table, or "doing" lunch with Jon's goldfish, Garfield's in it for the fun - and so are we!
Garfield Hits the Big Time
Garfield, the world's favorite feline, marks 15 years of laughs and lunches with this special silver volume, the 25th in his series of side-splitting comic compilations! After 15 years of funnies, Garfield's earned some extra sleep. But he'll still move a muscle for meals and mayhem! Whether he's hogging Jon's chair or hog-tieing Odie, Garfield shows us how to grow old gracefully.
Garfield Pulls His Weight
Garfield, the lovable feline who never met a lunch he didn't like, dishes up another book full of his heavy hijinx and weighty wit. Garfield's put on a few pounds over the years, but he's not just getting fatter, he's getting better! So keep the comedy and the calories coming! Whether he's painting Odie or chowing down on Jon's favorite fren, Garfield proves he's still a ton of fun.
Garfield Bigger and Better
But out lovable ball of full will take the leftovers, too! So get ready to party night and day as Garfield eats, sleeps, and (occassionally) purrs his way into your heart - especially if you're baking lasagna. Whether he's plotting his next late-night refrigerator raid, stalking a jelly donut, or scaring a Girl Scout for her chocolate mint cookies, it's all in the name of food and fun.
Garfield in Disguise
Halloween is Garfiel's favorite holiday - you dress up in a costume and next thing you know it's candy, candy, candy! So, disguised as an old Pirate Cap'n and his First Mate, Garfield and Odie hit the sidewalks of suburbia - and find themselves in a real-life, very scary ghost story!
A Garfield Christmas
The 4th Garfield Treasury
Another spectacular collection of the Sunday comics from his marvelous bestsellers!
Garfield Discovers America
Garfield tells the "real" story of Christopher Columbus' historic voyage in this factual and funny account of the discover of America!
Garfield's Ghost Stories
Who ghost there? It's Garfield! Everyone's favorite fat cat spends the night in a haunted house, faces a headless pirate ghost, and escapes from a phantom pharaoh in five frightfully funny ghost stories guaranteed to raise your spirits and make you shriek - with laughter!
Garfield en pique-nique
You might be wondering why I'm reviewing Garfield in a site dedicated to fantasy. After all he exists in a normal, non-magical world. He doesn't meet up with any dragons or unicorns or elves, only dogs, mice and the occasional spider. But Garfield isn't your run-of-the-mill cat. He talks (well, thinks), he eats things no normal cat would consider, he devises complex traps for Jon and Odie, and is able to package Nermal and address the box to Abu Dhabi. Oh, and he goes trick-or-treating too!
While a few of the above collections are mine, the vast majority belong to my sister. She was the big Garfield fan. While I enjoy this comic strip in small doses, I found over the years there are only so many jokes you can make about a cat that eats and sleeps too much, and who likes to pound Odie into a pancake. Yes, he does all those things in different ways each time, but in the end, he's always pretty much doing the same thing.
Anyway, I was sick over the holidays and found it hard to read actual books, but the comic strips were perfect as they were quick, short, and I could stop whenever I liked and pick it up again later. In truth, while I was right in my original feeling, that the topic was repetitive, I found that reading them all at once made the differences more clear. You knew he would steal Jon's food, or beat up Odie, but it was the "how" that made it funny.
Plus the strip hadn't been in my newspaper for years and I found I kind of missed it. I know I was conflicted when they took it out of the paper, but I prefered they take that one than other more original strips.
But you know, it wouldn't be Halloween without watching the Garfield special. The same at Christmas time. And I miss that morning cartoon, Garfield and Friends, which has gone the way of many great 80's and 90's cartoons. Kids shows just aren't what they used to be.
The neat part of having this collection of books that spans several years is to see the drawing style change over time. The original Garfield looked really different than the one most people think of. And in the matter of 3-4 books, he morphed into the orange fat cat we have grown to love. One warning, the colour collection? It just brings together all the Sunday comics into one book and duplicates that which is in the other black & white editions which cover the entire week. At one point I felt like it was deja-vu until I figured out I really had read them before!
There are other non-comic strip based books too. Like the ghost one, or the one where Garfield explains the true history behind Christopher Columbus' discovery of America. Garfield comes in many languages, like the one french one we have.
And when checking if these books are still in print, they have been republished in full colour! Although there is something to be said for the classic black and white renditions that are reminiscent of when one first reads it in the paper.
