New Beginnings
There's more to Aria than meets the eye. She's a guardian angel. And to earn her wings, she'll have to help three different girls.
Aria's first mission is Gabby Torres. Gabby's brother is sick, and Gabby's been so worried about his for so long, she's forgotten who she is. When a new school offers her a fresh start, Gabby learns it's hard to make friends while keeping half her life a secret.
Then Aria shows up. Aria, who knows exactly what to say and do to make Gabby feel better. Can Aria help Gabby find herself again? And will Gabby still trust Aria when she discovers what her new friends really is?
When we start off in the hospital with Gabby's brother being treated for cancer I figured this would be a really depressing book. And it is a bit depressing. But Aria's whole purpose is to cheer up Gabby so it's also a cute middle grade tale of a girl who yes, has to deal with this sad stuff, but also needs to find herself at school, while also trying to figure out this really weird friend she's just made. After all Aria tends to come off as a little...different. She doesn't know about most obvious things, she doesn't appear to have parents, and her shoelaces change colour without warning. She also likes to pick her lunches out in monochrome colours, like say all purple (what on earth was she eating??).
The next two books are on OpenLibrary so maybe I'll give them a try since they are quick reads and uplifting even when dealing with serious problems.
