I was looking for something else in the graphic novel section of the library when the title Elfes jumped out at me, after all I'm going a faery/elf/etc themed year. Grabbing one I was impressed with the cover art...ok sure the women are a little overendowed and underdressed and the men are overly muscled but on the whole it looked pretty interesting. And each book had a different author/illustrator team which seemed interesting, all these separate stories that all take place in the same world, instead of one single story line.

Sometimes cover art tricks you, only to find the internal art to be not up to par, but that's not the case here, these books really are beautiful. There are a lot of battle scenes but nothing too gory, and some nudity but so far nothing sexual. Sometimes graphic novels can be too intense in that way, intending to shock the reader or something, but here its about the story and the world so wonderfully constructed.

Well, spoke too soon, as the books continue the clothing became less and less and the breasts got bigger and bigger (if this trend continues the women won't be able to stand upright). There also appeared to be consistency problems with how the elves were named, just compare the first set of main character names with those that followed. But one book stood out, it was book 5 about the black elves, this one I found particularly fascinating since we essentially go to a school for evil. Turns out black elves are a kind of genetic mutation and can come from any of the elvish races. They are brought to this school and are taught to kill, to become assassins, spies and of course acquire the skill of necromancy.

Now, after the fifth book, they loop around back to the start again with another tale about the blue elves. This is kind of neat, you can have these artists all working in parallel, all inside the same world, telling tales of the various races of the elves, and the stories can continue even as you jump between characters. Sure, some of the characters die so new ones come up, and not everything is consistent across the books.

Now those first five books were just an intro, as the series continues a single overall arc becomes to develop, a dead necromancer is ressurected and she seeks to take vengeance on the land with her army of ghouls. For the next 15 books or so this is the core of the plots of most of the books, with character either being directly involved in the battle or only somewhat affected as events take place further away from them. We also jump around time a fair amount, learning how things started, the origins of the dark elf necromancer and an extinct race of elves.

And the different series start to overlap. Redwin the dwarf appears to do battle against the ghouls alongside the elves. The ghouls menace the orc and goblins in their storylines. And the orc La Poisse appears in the elf series to rescue the life of a very strange young white elf who is the end results of the battle of the ghouls. Its actually quite challenging reading all these series at the right pace to be introduced to the characters in one series to appreciate them popping up in another!

But at this point I'm quite invested in the series, reading about four a week!! Even my father has started looking at them (not so much reading since his French isn't good enough), after all the artwork is gorgeous so its worth even just looking at the pictures.

I will say, much as I love the entire series of Le Monde d'Aquilon, if I had to buy a subset (there's a lot of books in this series, buying them all is a serious investment) it would be Gaw'yn's storyline. He pretty much has his own concerns as he moves about the world, only lightly brushing up against core events in the rest of the series. He's pretty to look at, however impossible his assassin skills I enjoyed watching him take out 20 people in 10 seconds, and he probably had one of the biggest character arcs, going from a killer that simply loves to kill, to falling in love, to wanting to shed his darker impules. At first the falling in love part worried me that he'd become an angsty loser, but nope, it managed to work out, he essentially becames this kind of really scary but good guy, and he continued to grow to be one of my favorites. And while book 35 is currently the last elf book in about a year, its clear there is more to come for this character and presumably all the other Elvish races. In the meantime I'll have be content with a war of the races (Guerres d'Arran) and exloring a whole new continent (Terres d'Ogon).
