I read this back in January, I had every intention of borrowing the other books in the series from the library but never got around to it, and now its December. Figured I'd better write up the review before I completely forget everything.

There were bits I liked, how everyone is following the Effigies on forums and such, they have favorites to root for, and then the excitment when one dies and finding out who takes their place. It was also interesting to meet the Effigies themselves, their varying personalities, and whether or not they even want the job or are any good at it. After all not everyone would volunteer to risk one's life on a daily basis fighting monsters that from from the sky (I had visions of one of the Marvel movies). And it isn't easy losing your companions and having to train the newbie who probably comes in all shiny new and excited to do her duty, at least until her soul is crushed by battle, loss, and yes, even fame. They can't go anywhere without the media reporting on every little thing they do.

And then there was the mysterious character of Saul, who seems to have surprisingly effigy-like power though he's a guy and shouldn't be able to do any of that. And yet Saul is also more complicated than he appears to be, in fact, there seems to be a giant mystery at the core of everything, and that maybe the Effigies cannot trust the very corporation that is supposed to take care of them.

The fact that I remember the book well enough after year, the personalities of the characters and the core of the plot means it was a memorable read, which wasn't always the case with books I read for free on rivitedlit.com (in fact this book showed up a second time). Hopefully I'll have a chance to catch up on the rest of the trilogy next year, along with the continuation of several other books I started on rivitedlit.com
