Let the Dead Sleep
An Object of Desire? Or of Fear?
It was stolen from a New Orleans grave—the centuries-old bust of an evil man, a demonic man. It's an object desired by collectors and by those with wickedness in their hearts.
One day, its current owner shows up at Danni Cafferty's antiques shop on Royal Street, the shop she inherited from her father. But before Danni can buy the statue, it disappears and the owner is found dead….
Michael Quinn, former cop and now private investigator, is determined to find and destroy this object with its long history of evil and even longer trail of death. He and Danni are drawn together in their search for the missing statue, following it through sultry New Orleans nights to hidden places in the French Quarter and secret ceremonies on abandoned plantations.
But Cafferty and Quinn know that their story won't end when this case is closed and the dead rest in peace once again.
I found this in one of those book exchange boxes and was intrigued by the mix of mystery and fantasy but was a bit worried it would turn out to be horror. Turns out its not even remotely scary, which was completely fine by me. More time is spent on dealing with human evils than possessed busts. I didn't expect to enjoy it very much, but I wanted to give it a try and know what, I liked it.
The premise is this man running an antiques shop works with the private detective to destroy the evil objects of the world (or at least of New Orleans, what with Rice's vampires and witches, as well as Harris, there's plenty of creepy magic stuff that ends up here). But then the antiques shop owner dies without passing his legacy on to his daughter, so when the detective comes for help she's pretty clueless...but ends up getting involved anyway after having painted a woman who only later shows up in her shop wanting to sell a bust she claims is possessed and drove her husband to suicide. Woman and detective don't get along at first, but this is Mira a Harlequinn imprint, so you know that that will change, but will also not get too steamy.
We run about the darker corners of New Orleans, get exposed to what voodoo really is (its not about cutting heads off chickens and sticking pins in dolls, that's the movies), but also run into satanic cults, and of course, the sculpture of a cruel man whose essence refuses to die. All in all, it had a good mix of mystery, fantasy and romance, none overpowered the other. So instead of being too creeped out to continue, I want to read the other books, especially as Danni learns more about what her father was doing to protect the world.
