I found the book about Jewel in a book exchange box, I love horses so I figured I'd do a quick read and then put it back for someone of the target age group. It was...well kinda bizarre. Starts off ok, but then we end up in a labyrinth with stone monsters and growing crystals that want to crush you, and living puppets. I mean someting like this could be very interesting but it just wasn't. And Jewel was sometimes helpful, which you'd expect from a magical horse tasked with guarding the key to the treasure, and sometimes didn't seem to have a clue what was going on. And how did Eleanor's mother get through all the challenges that required a horse to get past? To open the labyrinth you needed to do a dressage routine after all. So confusing and very little made sense. The one thing I liked was the idea that Jewel was originally a statue that came to life, I would have much prefered to read that story instead.
