Years ago I was at a museum exhibit in Quebec City about dragons. It's not often you get to view an exhibit on this topic! But among the artifacts was a mention of a Quebec book series called Amos Daragon. I filed it away in the back of my head to one day check it out, after all I can read French but rarely do, this was an opportunity to do so.

Years passed when a free copy of book 10, La grande croisade, fell into my hands. Normally I would never start so near the end of a series, but figured I'd give it a try just to see if I would even like it, accepting the risks of being completely lost. For what it was worth, I was able to get into the book no problem at all, there might have been nine books before this one, but whenever something was referenced it was done in such a way I could catch up very quick...in fact I oddly don't feel a real need to read the others, that it was perfectly fine to start where I did. The author clearly did well! I immediately learned of the main characters and the villain. I also picked up on the fact that it pulled a lot from mythology, a bit like Rick Riordan's stuff, without the humour, but with all the action and adventure, and of course the fact the protagonists are all young, saving the world where the adults were failing to be remotely useful.

Now that I know this series is a lot of fun, though other than the name "Daragon" I wouldn't say it's particularly a dragon series, yes one of the characters is a dragon but he's quite secondary, but I never would have picked it up if it weren't for that museum exhibit!

I decided to tackle the rest of the series this year, and my description I wrote two years ago pretty holds true for all the books. Now I didn't manage to get through everything, I caught up to book 10 but then ran out of time to finish the last two. About the only thing I'd add to what I wrote before is that sometimes it can be incredibly dark. There's one book where Amos is sent to Hell, and he literally died in a few really horrific ways on several occassions that was just disturbing to envision. They even have him kill his romantic interest in one book (is this a spoiler when the book itself has an oracle that predicts this very thing?).

But on the whole, if you enjoy Rick Riordan's stuff, and you can read French, this is a really fun series with lots of mythology, folklore and legends all mixed up and smooshed into a single series, where you can battle Norse gods one day, British Redcaps another, and Summerian gods the next. And plenty of shapechanges, druids and other wizards as well.

Look forward to winter being over so I can start my long walks to the library again to finish off the last few books next year.
