A Dragon's Guide to the Care and Feeding of Humans
To train your pet, you will need three things: Patience, Patience, and, above all, Patience!
Feisty dragon Miss Drake has a new pet human, precocious Winnie. Oddly enough, Winnie seems to think Miss Drake is her pet - a ridiculous notion! Miss Drake has her work cut out for her if she's ever going to train Winnie to be the perfect companion.
Miss Drake introduces Winnie to the mysterious and fantastic creatures of San Francisco, and Winnie wants to draw them all. But her sketchbook is not what it seems. Winnie's sketchlings come alive, escape, and run loose through the city streets. Can Winnie and Miss Drake put an end to the mayhem? And will they discover that the bonds of friendship can make up for the pangs of loss?
This refreshing, whimsical debut collaboration by Laurence Yep, a two-time Newbery Honor Book author and Laura Ingalls Wilder Award winner, and imaginative poet Joanne Ryder features charming illustrations by Mary GrandPre.
A Dragon's Guide to Making Your Human Smarter
Three-thousand-year-old Miss Drake has arranged to send her dear pet Winnie to The Spriggs Academy, an extraordinary school for humans and magicals alike. Winnie is particularly excited about magic class and having Sir Isaac Newton for science. She’s also making new friends—and frenemies. . . .
When a plot to snatch Winnie from her San Francisco home is uncovered, Miss Drake is ready to use all her cunning and magic to thwart it. Not that feisty Winnie needs the help. . . . As a team, the intrepid duo you first met in A Dragon’s Guide to the Care and Feeding of Humans is unstoppable!
With equal doses of whimsy and humor, Laurence Yep and Joanne Ryder have crafted an enchanting story about true friendship.
A Dragon's Guide to Making Perfect Wishes
Plucky pair Winnie and Miss Drake are traveling back in time to the 1915 San Francisco World's Fair. Waiting in the past are Winnie's great-grandfather Caleb, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and a centuries-old mystery: Who stole the Heart of Kubera necklace? Despite the excitement, Winnie's only wish is to lose Rowan, an unusual boy who has the annoying habit of showing up at inconvenient times. But the wise Miss Drake knows her pet Winnie should be careful what she wishes for--especially when her wish-granting souvenirs follow them home.
This is a fun series, just the kind of thing I needed after reading some much darker tales. In the first one, Winnifred who is human meets the dragon that was her Aunt Amelia's pet...or is it Miss Drake who is a dragon meets the niece of her pet Fluffy? With a shifting point of view and each character believing it is their job to take care of their new "pet", the story is very funny. I was actually surprised at how clever it could be at times. And of course, dragons aren't the only magical creature Winnie will meet, lots of adventures abound. Also, things are all fun and games, Winnie is dealing with the loss of her father, a grandfather that thinks his daughter isn't a good mother and wants to take his grand-daughter from himself. That's a lot for a young girl to deal with, but Winnie isn't your average little girl...sometimes much to Miss Drake's dismay. This pet is going to need a lot of training!
In the second book Winnie goes to Miss Spriggs, a school of magical creatures and the humans that are aware of their existence. So while Winnie isn't the only human, nor the only student without magic, there are a lot of other students and teachers to keep things interesting, like a hummingbird English teacher or her best friend, a dwarf. And what child wouldn't want to go to a school where you step through a magical closet to go visit the Loch Ness Monster?
The third book has a grand time travel adventure and mystery to solve. And of course some lessons to be learned about making wishes and a couple new characters are introduced to keep the readers guessing as to their intentions. I don't know if this is the last in the series or not, but I know I wouldn't mind reading more!
