I'd watched the anime a couple times before I read the manga. I was immediately taken by it, we have a young man, a high school student, who looks around at the world all he sees are bad people hurting others. There is rape and murder, robbery and assault, and he wishes he could do something to change all that.

Lo and behold, what should discover but a notebook that will kill anyone whose name is written on it's pages. Touching it also allows you to see the Shinigami, the death god, that owns that notebook. Ryuk was bored in the realm of the death gods so he came to Earth and let someone pick up the notebook, in the hopes something interesting happens.

Well, it was interesting indeed. Light takes advantage of the power of the notebook to start killing those he feels should not just be punished, but removed entirely from the world to protect everyone else. At this point the reader has to deal with an ethical dilema...Light is clearly murdering people, however, because these are bad people and the world would be better off without them, isn't he doing us all a favour and we should root for him? After all, as Light claims, he's not doing it for his own benefit (though he clearly doesn't mind being called a god) but for the greater good of everyone else. He's willing to sacrifice his soul to make a better world for generations to come.

Eventually the police start to notice the deaths and they bring in their best investigator, known only as L. And so begins the real story, the race between L to find out who Kira really is, and Light to kill L before he is discovered. A battle of great minds, a twisted plot of misdirections and traps to trick their opponents into making mistakes.

And all along, you find yourself rooting for the villain, the handsome and sauve Light, while being somewhat repulsed by the awkward and strange L. Even when Light is willing to sacrifice his family if need be, to use the girl that loves him as a tool, to manipulate the people that worship Kira as their new god, you still kind of want him to win. After all he manages to get so far, you have to admire his ability to outwit his opponents, he (and the reader) puts so much effort into avoiding capture you can't help wanting his schemings to pay off.

While very dark and disturbing, especially as you find yourself sympathizing with someone who can only be categorized as a psychopath with delusions of grandeur, it is still a fascinating read as you have to keep track of all the threads and plots as the great minds battle it out. The prize is godhood, failure is death.
