This story is beautifully written. It begins with Saffron, the food taster for the Traitor King. Her job is to experience the pastries her husband makes before the King takes a bite. But these are not simple cakes, each one is designed to evoke a certain kind of memory. Whether of one of your happiest days, or perhaps one of your worst. As the tasting proceeds, Saffron wonders what he husband is planning as she is led through her memories of their times together, of what he is trying to tell her, of the story that is unfolding. It is a tale that emphasizes the power memories have over us and how they can control us, and sometimes, even defeat us. A magical tale and I enjoyed reading every word of it.
