I have always loved the way Michael Hague depicts unicorns, they aren't just horses with a horn on their head but something other, a kind of mix of creatures and a little of their own thing. When I had an opportunity to buy a few of his books he did with Marianna Mayer (The Unicorn and the Lake, The Unicorn Alphabet) this one came as part of the package. For whatever reason it was a few years before I actually read the book though.

This is a lovely book depicting 21 different myths and legends, some of which like the Abatwa, were unfamiliar to me. The artwork is of course absolutely stunning, so few children's books these days have really nice illustrations, devolving into a quality which the child himself could have drawn, which I find a pity, we don't need to dumb down to them you know, and that's true of the art as well.

Now as an adult this book took me a whole of ten minutes to read, but for a child, this is a book to be treasured, along with the other Mayer/Hague pairings. The magical artwork can really help their imaginations run free.
