Donut is a unicorn with a problem: she cannot fly--so she works with all the other creatures in the field and finally accomplishes her goal.

The moment I saw the cover of this book I knew it was on the top of the list of books to find at the library. I mean, look at the artwork, the unicorn is actually pretty! Sure, she's a little chubby but she's cute in a Shetland Pony way. And the artist is, you know, actually able to draw! So many unicorn books published post-2000 have worse artwork than that produced by the target audience which I find unfortunate. But this one, I was so eager to not just read the book but to look at it.
And I wasn't disappointed. Was it silly? Sure. In the first attempt to fly Donut takes a big jump off a tree stump and her legs flail in the air. Definitely not graceful unicorn here, but still pretty to look at! Goes to show that you can do a silly kids book, but at the same time have lovely illustrations to go along with it. I love her thick mane that covers her eyes like a sheepdog. And even when the scenes don't fill the entire page, its still a complete drawing with backgrounds and foregrounds and skies all coloured in and nicely shaded. And aww, when Donut slumps in defeat all the little woodland animals give her a big hug. It's so sweet.
There is very little text but that's ok. Donut thinks and talks in pictures, it was cute. You can have your kids fill in the words.
This is a unicorn book published in the last decade that I would be happy to give my kids...if I had any that is.
